Getting a clerkship

I know that it can be difficult to land a clerkship, especially a prestigious one.

Is it better to start clerking right out of college or work for a prestigious firm for a couple of years and then start clerking?

Finally, any recommendations for an informative book about getting a clerkship/job description of clerkship?

I appreciate any input in advance.

bump…

You can’t get a clerkship until you’re done with law school, so there’s absolutely no reason for you to worry about this for a long time.

I mis-typed on my original post… I said, “Right out of college” when I actually meant “right out of law school”. Yes, I do know that I would need to graduate Law School before I could ever get a clerkship.

I realize that, considering I’m a college freshman, Law School is years down the road. However, I firmly believe that gaining knowledge about a career or career path is always a good thing, regardless of age or even relevance.

I have a sibling who graduated from a Top 25 Law School and did fairly well there, and I posed the original question because this sibling currently works for a fairly prestigious firm and is interested in landing a clerkship, if at all possible. I was considering buying a book about clerkships as a bday gift for her upcoming birthday.

While most who do clerkships still do them immediately following graduation from law school, it is becoming increasingly popular for people to practice for a year or two and then apply to clerkships. For the most part, though, the people who seem to get the clerkships after working have the credentials to have gotten those clerkships right out of law school.

Here is a list of the total number of Supreme Court clerks from different schools since 1991:
