Getting a D in a course unrelated to my Finance Major, how will employers see this?

My major is Finance & Banking, and I attend a well-respected, major public university (a sophomore). I am going to have a D in my Ethnic and Multicultural English Course. My GPA is in the mid 3’s, and I have done very well in all my courses whether business related or not. This D will bring my GPA down to somewhere around 3.05. The deadline for withdrawing from the course has passed and I am not looking to retake it because getting a D will satisfy the Ethnic requirement for General Education. I would have a 96% if the course is only graded on assignment grades, but I had poor participation and attendance.

This class does not relate to my core GPA at all for business, however, I fear including my new overall GPA on internship & job applications. Is this going to affect me when applying for jobs?

I’d look at it negatively especially since your other grades are good. It’s obvious you blew it off and half assed it. As an employer I want someone who is 100% all the time. Not much you can do know. But be prepared to address it if it comes up. Good luck.

You don’t want to retake, you say a D is ‘good enough.’ You missed classes and had poor participation.

That attitude won’t get you far in the real world of finance and banking. Learn from this. Fix it. Retake. No settling for a D you brought on yourself.
Life lesson.

A number of employers have GPA cutoffs for who they will interview so a D will lower your GPA and hurt you. And if a potential employer asks to see your transcript the D in Ethics will be a red flag.

And agree with the others – your level of immaturity evidenced by your lack of attendance/participation in the class does not bode well for your future in business. This class sounds like with a minimum effort it could have boosted your GPA rather than hurt it. In the working world you cannot choose which assignments from your boss you are interested in doing and which you are not. Time to grow up and recognize that every class, every assignment deserves your full effort.

@happy1 The class was Ethnic, rather than Ethics, but I agree with your comments. It was immature of OP to blow off the class that should have been a grade boost. As a sophomore, never do that again. It reflects poorly on your work ethic.

@TQfromtheU OOPS…thanks for the correction. But agree – not giving full effort to any course is immature and will reflect poorly on the OP, especially if that trend continues throughout college.

Re-take IMO. Somebody hiring you might look at that poor grade and think that you are not willing to put in the work for things you aren’t directly interested in.
