Getting a head start on my major

Hello all,

I’ve been in a terrible mood. Sadly, I found out today that my admission has gotten revoked. Do not even ask why. It is a long story filled with terrible luck. I got rescinded by UC Berkeley. However, I am absolutely set on still graduating from Berkeley with the Class of 2019. I’ll take a gap year, reapply, and get done in a year. I know I can. That being said, I am a statistics major. Is there a way I can get a head start on the Statistics upper division courses at Berkeley? Berkeley extension does not offer upper division courses.

I’m pretty sure you’re being too much of an idealist.

@Gumbymom you know lots about the UC system.

1: You better have some safety schools if you're going to re-apply in a year.

2: Generally, schools require that you complete around half of your units at the institution you transfer to. Therefore, even if you do get into UCB again, you will still have 2 years, you can't just "get done in a year"

Will the reason your admission was revoked by UCB, be an issue when you reapply? You also have to be careful when taking Upper division classes as a transfer since there are unit limits for High Unit Juniors and Senior transfer applicants.

Look at the link for Page 34 to determine if you additional units will be transferable.

I would also contact a UCB advisor and see if your plan is doable.

Best of luck.

I can take max 3 upper div courses for my major at another college, as long as I submit a non-UC Berkeley equivalency form and get it approved by the Head of my major department.
Along with that, I can sign up for Concurrent Enrollment and take an American Culture class to satisfy that.

I have already found 3 equivalent courses (all cluster courses since those are easier to get approved as equivalent course.) So by next year, I will be 4 courses in to my major. That leaves me with a math class, 3 core classes, and 3 electives. And ill have 2 summers, fall, and spring to complete that. Definitely doable.

To make sure I get accepted, I applied for a data science internship this fall. Fingers crossed I land the internship. That, and straight A’s. That’s guaranteed admission. My admission got revoked due to an unfortunate misunderstanding. It is my fault, but I also got screwed over big time.

Why would you get started with upper-division courses? Are you a transfer student?

Most colleges have what’s called a residency requirement, meaning you have to take a certain number of courses with the college before you can graduate from there. Often, it’s 60 credits. Many universities cap how many credits you can transfer in, too, and that’s generally at 60 credits. (Berkeley makes it kind of difficult to easily find that information).

Given that, if you don’t start this fall, it’s unlikely that you will finish Berkeley with the class of 2019 - especially if you start in the fall of 2018. If you do start in the fall of 2018, you should probably plan on graduating in the spring of 2020 - maybe fall 2019 at the earliest.

@JohnSmith51000 you didn’t listen to what I said. The issue isn’t that the classes won’t be transferrable, it’s exactly what juillet said about the residency requirement.

@juillet @philbegas I understands what you guys are saying now. Thank you very much.
Sadly, after looking at the degree requirements at Berkeley, they don’t specifically state how many units I must take at the college. They allow 70 transferrable units, and it takes 120 units to obtain a bachelor’s. I’ll be finding out from a counselor soon. Thanks everyone

Best of luck with the situation. Don’t forget to have back-up transfer colleges though, no guarantee you’ll get into UCB again.
