So, a good friend of mine applied to the University of North Texas, which is a pretty good school, but not the best state flagship in Texas. He doesn’t have a very high GPA or class rank, and his SAT scores were extremely low. However, he wants to study graphic design, and has been going to a magnet school of sorts it for the past two years, and he has a very strong portfolio. He just got rejected from UNT, which was the only school he applied to because it was the only school that had the program he wanted. He is really worried, and came to me for advice on how to get the adcom to reconsider his application/grant him admission. I have absolutely no idea what to do. What do you guys think?

In general, a college or university will sometimes reconsider its admissions decision if some important information about you was incorrect in or missing from your application. For example, you might have retaken the ACT and done much better, but the score was not reported properly to the university. Or there might have been a grading error in your math class, so that the transcript sent at mid-year said you had a D when you should have had a B+. But there must be some important information about which the institution was either not informed or misinformed.

I don’t know anything about North Texas (neither the area nor the University), but I don’t know of a single college or university that will reconsider a rejection because the applicant really, really wants to go there.

I think your friend’s best option is to enroll somewhere else–community college, maybe, or some other college or university that is still accepting applications–and to do well there in the hope that he’ll be able to transfer to North Texas.
