I’m Scoresman, got a tattoo.

“NONE of the older adults I know with tattoos are in the least bit trashy.”

Sure they are. They have tattoos. Being “trashy” is defined by doing things that are “trashy.” A time may come when tattoos are so common and accepted that they won’t suggest “trashy” to very many people, but that time is obviously not quite here yet.

^^ I guess we travel in different circles. Wall Street Journal reports that tattoos are no longer trashy in most professional circles. So there! :)

The part I don’t get is why ask for people’s opinions if you’re just going to argue with them? Were you just hoping that everybody was going to agree with you and then you’d feel better about it?

Maybe it’s because my eyesight is getting poorer as I grow older, but I have yet to see a small “tasteful” tatoo on an ankle, foot, wrist or shoulder that, from more than five feet away, doesn’t look like a very nasty bruise. And that’s attractive?

The part I don’t get is why ask for people’s opinions if you’re just going to argue with them? Were you just hoping that everybody was going to agree with you and then you’d feel better about it?

The part I don’t get is why try and argue your point when you aren’t able to back it up other than a superficial " I don’t like it".

What does Jesus mean when he says – “Judge NOT, that you be not judged” in Matt 7:1. Is he telling us that we can never judge anyone?

No. Jesus did not intend to forbid judgements of all kinds. When Jesus said, “Judge not”, he forbade unkind, unjustified and improper censure resulting from hasty and superficial investigation, and without regard for the well being of the person, or persons, criticized.

*We can judge a person by their fruits, what a person lives – Matt 7:15-20.
As a tree is know by its fruit, so do we judge of the character of men by their conduct.
10Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him.
11You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned – Tit 3:10,11. Paul made a judgment about someone – from what he had heard from other Christians - 1 Cor 5:1-3.

We are NOT to judge a person by their appearance – John 7:24.*

Google is yur frind ;)

Look…what are you all so afraid of?

I’ve said it before…if you don’t like the idea of a tattoo, don’t get one. But there is no reason for you to judge someone else based solely on their appearance when you don’t even know them.

For instance…if your best friend in the whole world one day showed up with a very small tattoo on the inside of her wrist, would you think less of her? Probably not.

So then, why should you judge someone to be “trashy” that you don’t even know?

Sometimes I really have to wonder if you guys all really think this way. Are you making yourselves seem more harsh because of the anonymity of the internet?

Come on…would you really stop loving your kids if they got a tattoo? Would you really never forgive them for it?

So much for unconditional love.

“For instance…if your best friend in the whole world one day showed up with a very small tattoo on the inside of her wrist, would you think less of her? Probably not.”

I’ll bite. In that situation, my friend, or even my child, would have changed from a person with enough sense to not have a tattoo into a person with the bad judgment to have a tattoo. So, yes, I would think somewhat less of that person, just as I thought a little less of my son when he cut class. That doesn’t mean that I stop loving the person, or that I can’t balance that lapse of judgment against all the other many wonderful things about the person. But it does move the needle a bit toward “trashy.”

Well, fortunately, there are lots of people who like trashy. As the country song goes, “I like my women just a little on the trashy side.”

Momofwildchild wrote “I like my women just a little on the trashy side.”

Wow, I didn’t realize. That’s hot!

Hmmm, wonder if my wife will let me like my women on the wild side. :)

^^ Not “wild”- TRASHY. There’s a difference! You are only trashy if you get a tattoo. :)

Sorry - must have been a Freudian slip ;)

I have always hated slips

I guess I just be trashy ;)

^^ You brazen hussy, you!

^ You folks crack me up. :D

I don’t mind tatoos…just haven’t seen any that I like. On the other hand DH is CEO of a large company and would never hire anyone who has a tatoo/piercing that shows regardless of ability. His prejudice, his perogative. Visible tatoos are controversial in certain parts of the country. If you are prepared for that…gp for it!

Where I grew up, I would guess over half of people between 18 and 35 had tattoos. I am not sure if this means I just lived in a very trashy place, or if it means that tattoos are less trashy there than in other places.

Six-year-old paper from the pediatric literature -

Roberts T and Ryan S. Tattooing and high-risk behavior in adolescents. Pediatrics 2002; 110: 1058-1063

In adolescents:
Tattooing significantly associated with older age, living in a single-parent household, lower socioeconomic status, and peer substance misuse
Tattooing associated with reported sexual intercourse, substance misuse, violent behavior, and school problems

Elaboration needed?
