I’m fairly new to this, so please forgive me!!!

How do you get a hospital internship? Do hospitals offer them to underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores in college)? Where should I look, and even if positions aren’t officially listed, is it prudent to ask for a position?

Thanks!!!

If there isn’t a program for it, you usually won’t have much luck getting such a position. At least in my experience.

That said, what kind of ‘internships’ are you talking about?

[Co-ops/Internships on the Web](Co-ops/Internships on the Web)

Most of these programs are for the summer but having such an experience for any length of time is more valuable than not.

You need to be very precise in what you mean by “internship” in a medical setting because it’s different than what you normally think of. When you say “intern” around a bunch of doctors, they’ll think you’re talking about a first year resident - someone who just graduated from medical school (so they are an actual physician) and is in the first year of their specialty training. So if you ask a physician to be an intern as a college student, you’d likely have some very confused looks…
