Getting Cars to Where They are Needed

OK, I know you guys pitched in on the topic about cars–shipping them and whether that’s worthwhile or not. S has just inherited a 2002 Mercedes with only 25,000 miles on it which was excellently maintained by his late aunt. He needs to get it from SF to Arlington VA. Suggestions on how to get it there via a reliable transport so that it is not driven but put on a rack & gets across country are greatly appreciated.

Also, for D, we are thinking of buying a silent auction item to ship her the 2005 Volvo S40 from HNL to San Diego. We bought one for S @ $500 and will be bidding on the item at an upcoming silent auction

I know you guys made comments on the above thread.
Any other contructive thoughts on topic are appreciated. We already have three other cars at our house for only two drivers, AFTER we ship the Volvo, so don’t want to keep it nor sell it & have to buy D a car in LA.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I have friends who have used those services that transport cars and they have had good luck with them. Besides classic car forums, another source might be to pick up a copy of hemming’s motor news, which is one of the places serious car people look for cars and parts, and transport places advertise. If you check the firms out, they should be willing to give you an estimate, I have seen online cost calculators (an easy one? Go on e-bay motors, and find a listing that would roughly be like you are planning to do, some of them have shipping estimators).

If you choose a firm, make sure they have sufficient insurance to cover liability and be careful of the contract, some of the firms have disclaimers that basically means they don’t have to cover anything except catastrophic loss, and there are fly by night firms out there, which is one of the reason I recommend hemmings. For a car like that with low mileage, worth not having it driven or put on flatbed:)
