How does interest in schools/schools sending you mailings factor with adcoms?

For instance, I got four e-mails and four letters from Columbia in one month, and just got an e-mail from Princeton the other day (without signing up for either of their mailing lists beforehand) and got summer programs packets from Harvard and Stanford.

I requested Columbia’s Blue Album, and have gone on a registered visit to the school (since receiving the information), and have requested Princeton’s literature since as well.

I don’t really believe that getting school mailings has any real influence on adcoms nor is it a big indicator of whether you will be accepted. Throughout your junior and senior years you will get hundreds (thousands?) of emails and letters from schools. Unfortunately, they send it to tons of high school students, so it doesn’t really have much bearing on whether you’ll be accepted.

As for demonstrating interest in the school by going visiting/requesting info, it depends on the college. Some colleges admit that they look for demonstrated interest (Emory comes to mind), while others don’t necessarily do so.
