What is a good way to get employer’s attention? I have tried e-mailing and applying online but only a few reply back. I have tried to go through my school’s career center. What other ways are good? Is cold-calling an option?

The one thing that will get an employer’s attention is a high GPA. Usually that is the first thing they look at since they have to go through many resumes.

I agree that a great GPA is a definite attention getter.

Also, here’s something I read one time: since companies can get a huge number of on-line applications, they might have an automatic filter that looks for specific keywords. So when you apply on-line, make sure you include as many good keywords in your application as you can so that you don’t get filtered out.

Now that you have your ‘keywords’, another way to use them is on those sites where you can sign up for automatic emails whenever a ‘help wanted’ posting is made that contains your words. That’s how my D got her first internship; it was last-minute and totally unexpected; if not for the auto-email she got, she never would have known to apply, but she was able to do so immediately (… and she also had a great GPA!) <smiley goes=“” here=“”></smiley>
