Getting F in Tests during the school year

My daughter is a sophomore. She is currently struggling with US History. Her first quarter ended with a B+. Her second quarter isnt going that well. She currently has a B-. She has a few F’s in the first and second quarters. How does this have an impact on her college admissions, I guess my question is how deep is the transcript drilling during admissions. I think most colleges ask for transcripts. Do the transcripts have a drill down of every test and HW that they ever took?

It is different for every school but most transcripts only include final grades, some might rarely include semester grades. They certainly will not have a breakdown of every test and homework assignment that was ever taken. As long as your daughter works hard to bump her overall average up, she should be fine

I would be more concerned about the reason your daughter is getting these F grades on tests, than anything else.

What is going on?

^^agree with Thumper. How can/why is a B+ student be receiving F’s on tests? (Besides the obvious: blowing it off.)

Are these F’s on tests or homework assignments? Is she handing in her homework (the most common reason for an F)? If not, try to figure out why. If she’s anxiety-ridden because she’s struggling consider getting a tutor and maybe a session with a counselor or talk with her teacher. Some students need to learn I
ot’s okay to struggle and hand in work that may not get an A.

^^the title says, “Tests”…

oops. It’s very hard to believe a student can get a B+ if she got a F on a test, and that F stuck (no make up test). Actually even the B-seems improbable. I guess that’s why I assume homework.

It can happen if a project counts as much as a test grade and the project grade is very high, then all homework is turned in and is done well and then if you are lucky a there is a second test that you do far better on because this time you studied. Don’t ask me how I know these things.

@dramebaaz I recommend you order an official transcript from your counselor. Look at it and get familiar with it. You’ll see how your school does it and we won’t be guessing. I have never heard of a transcript that shows anything but semester or final grades, but there is a first for everything.

Depending on how your daughter’s teacher feels about her, that might not be one you would ask to write a Letter of Recommendation for her. On the other hand a friend of mine was told by one of her son’s teachers that he was the hardest working student he had ever seen even if the grade was not reflecting it- so he was able to write a very interesting letter for him.

Time to get involved. The transcript will only show final grades, not minutiae. However, her below expected performance needs addressing. She likely won’t be doing badly enough for the school to see any red flags but you do. This needs to be figured out so she can have a stellar junior year, doing HER best work.
