Getting from Penn Station to Juilliard

D is taking a bus to NYC to visit friend at Juilliard. How far is Juilliard from Penn Station?

A bus will actually arrive at the Port Authority, around 40th & 8th Ave., which is a bit closer to Julliard than Penn Station, where trains arrive.

It’s about 25 blocks to Julliard, around 66th & Broadway.

The bus schedule says it arrives at the northeast corner of 31st and 8th, adjacent to Penn Station.

From 31st and 8th to Juilliard would be just a little under a 2 mile walk. She could catch a #20 bus uptown on 8th Ave, which heads up 8th to 66th street, makes two quick lefts and stops quite close to Juilliard. She could also take an uptown A or C train from Penn Station to 59th Street where she could either transfer to the local 1, 2 or 3 train (not the express, which skips Lincoln Center) and take it to the very next stop, or else just walk seven or so blocks along Broadway from 59th. Or, she could hail a cab.

Thanks BassDad - sounds good. She wants to avoid the cab fare. I’m sure her friend will advise her - I just want to have a good idea of the options too.

The bus is the simplest route, but the subway will usually get her there a bit faster, particularly on heavy traffic days which are fairly common this time of year.

I would suggest she walk over to 34th street and Broadway and catch the 1 train to 66th st. It’s only a few blocks, and then she won’t have to transfer.

When we were there a few weeks ago, 50th and 59th St stations were NOT going uptown. I think trains weren’t stopping at 59th st just on weekends, but 50th wasn’t going uptown at all, due to construction. If she ends up at one of those stations, the trains were stopping going downtown, so she can go down to 42nd street, then switch to an uptown train. Watch out for express trains, too - we did that once. (That is, if you are using a map, make sure the number train you are taking actually stops where you want it to. If you take an express, you will ride for 20 minutes before you get to correct your mistake.)

We found it very confusing to transfer. Train numbers are only on the fronts of some trains, so if you don’t see it coming in, you have no idea what train you are on (we got the wrong train a few times.) We asked for help from station workers, and often got told names instead of numbers (like “Times Square” instead of 42nd street) - for us out of towners, we had no idea what they were talking about.

Print out a subway map before you go. It’s especially nice if you can get a “real” street map with subway and bus lines on it. We bought one at Barnes and Nobles.

They do have sporadic outages like that, and it is good to check [NYCT - Service Advisory](http://tripplanner.mta.info/NewTP/serviceAdvisories/ServiceAdvisoryAll.aspx) to see if any are planned for the day(s) you intend to travel. I do not see anything there about ongoing work at 50th or 59th street stations, so that may be over with.

Walking over to 7th Ave is a good idea if you do not want to transfer. It is probably a slightly shorter walk doing it that way than taking one of the 8th Ave trains to 59th and hoofing it to Juilliard from there. I think binx meant 34th and 7th rather than Broadway, since Broadway crosses 34th at 6th street. The station at 34th and 7th has the 1, 2 and 3 trains. The station at 34th and Broadway (Herald Square) will put you on the B, D, F, N, Q, R, V or W trains.

Just checked the map - it is definitely shorter to walk to the 1, 2 or 3 train at 34th and 7th than to walk to Juilliard from 59th and Broadway. Plus, if the weather is bad, you can duck into Penn Station and do all the walking indoors.

Well, if it were me I would go up by cab and back by train. Seriously, get a cab on 8th avenue and tell the cabbie you want to go to Amsterdam and 65th, tell him to take 10th Avenue up (10th becomes Amsterdam), this is a 10 minute ride almost any time of the day. Cost about $10 tip included. Get off at the corner and walk the 1/2 block to Juilliard.

If that’s really out of the question, walking to the 1 train is the best option.

I agree with binx…take the uptown 1 from Penn Station or any subway entrances in the vicinity off of the street…$2.25…get off at 65th Street and you are right at Juilliard. Everything else in convoluted.

Thanks all. Maybe her friend will meet her at the bus and we’ll see which route he chooses. I have a feeling he will be in dance rehearsal though.

She and I took the subway all over New York several years ago. We did get on one express by mistake. Everyone was very helpful. As soon as anyone saw a confused look on my face, they asked if I needed help and then pointed out exactly what to do. It literally started when we got off the train at Penn Station and I was looking at the big board - no doubt with a deer in the headlights look. I hadn’t been to NYC in years and was trying to get my bearings. A man walked up and commented that I looked a bit confused and asked where we wanted to go. He then mapped out the trip to various museums, to Rockefeller Center and every other destination we had on the list. He pointed out where to get the legal cabs and other tourist pitfalls. Of course, if a man approached her to offer help, I’d probably want her to scream “Danger/stranger” and run.
