This week my mailbox is providing me with great entertainment. My senior B/B- son is being bombarded with last minute (automatic admissions) for state schools. At the same time my A/A+ junior son is being hit with a heavy load of literature from schools like Rice and Wash U referencing the ACT he took last summer “just for fun” (if you want to call that fun)

I suppose I should assume that the state school haven’t met their goals and that the more demanding schools have now entered into a new recruitment year. And here I thought I could give it a rest for a few months!

S2 has gotten tons of “we’re still taking applications…” e-mails and a few phone calls from colleges he visited but did not apply… and postcards from every state Tier 2 school…ah the panic season hits.

The mounds of marketing material is one thing I will not miss next year. I hate to say it but I don’t think my son looked at anything other than Chicago’s ‘Life of the Mind’ brochure and that was just to flip through it!

Just be aware that marketing is a separate department from admissions. This could be jockeying for US News & Reports stats – as in "XX,XXX applied and we only accepted YYYY so our admission rate = teeny percent. They may not want to admit your kid even as they would very much like for your kid to apply.

I find a lot of this embarrassing. My son is getting emails and snail mail from all over right now. Do they really think that there are students who are going to open an email in February of senior year and say “Wow! This is where I have to go!”

Not only that but at our school, the GC office has finished with sending out transcripts, recommendations, etc. You need to give them 3 weeks lead time. If it’s a school you’re dying to go to, they have said they will work with you but it might be hard to meet deadlines at this point, even if they have been extended.
