Getting into Columbia outside of the system?

<p>Hey,</p>

<p>My name is Jonny, and I’ll be going into college here in Ireland after the summer.</p>

<p>Thing is, I’ve no real interest in it as I won’t really be experiencing anything new as I already live around the area of the main colleges and know a fair few people going.</p>

<p>I was in Cali and NY last summer and had a drive around UCLA and USC, with my preference being UCLA, as well as being told it was “safer”. Didn’t get to see Columbia when I was in NY though…</p>

<p>Basically, I’d like to move to America to go to college, and as an ultra-ambitious person I want to go to the best place available.</p>

<p>I preferred Cali to NYC, but I like the look of Columbia (from their website) and of course the fact it’s an Ivy league college. Is it realistic I could get into either of these colleges (obviously in this instance I mean Columbia) outside the system? By that I mean would it be possible to get in for the start of next year?</p>

<p>Of course it’s hard to not sound arrogant when listing your qualities, but I feel, well, know, I’m a very intelligent person and genuinely believe I’m going to be one of the richest people in the world through business. I’m hoping that this “confidence” would be a positive thing for colleges considering my application, but obviously as there’s no evidence (at the moment) of anything notable, they might just think I am what I sound like, an arrogant and somewhat deluded 19-year old wannabe.</p>

<p>I’ll be setting up a company after my exams (finish on the 20th June) and would expect to be a millionaire by 21, but at that stage I’m not sure how interested I’d be in college. In other words, I want it now…</p>

<p>Over here it’s very difficult to get into college without doing the necessary exams, but my (somewhat ignorant) impression is that it’s easier in the States. Am I being unrealistic in that respect?</p>

<p>Anyway, any information that could be of help would be held with immense gratitude and I thank you in advance.</p>

And easier in the states? Ha. Columbia is just about as hard as Oxford and Cambridge, if you’re familiar.
But still, being an international that’s not requesting financial aid helps, so might as well try.</p>

<p>there is no such thing as “outside of the system” …you have to apply at the same time everyone else applies and take the necessary SAT and SAT 2 tests. There is absolutely no way you can start in september if you didn’t apply in january. </p>

<p>good luck with becoming a millionaire hopefully you aren’t underestimating the difficulty of that as you are with college admissions.</p>

<p>Columbia accepted about nine out of every one-hundred students this year. Assume that, out of each hundred students, 98 of them took all the necessary tests and applied on time. Assume that, out of those, 80 of them are outstanding in both their grades and test scores. Assume that at least ten out of each hundred have been published or competed at a national level in their field of interest. Then add in somebody who thinks he’s so great that he can apply half a year late and without any necessary test scores.</p>

<p>You need to be a lot more thorough in your research. This is not going to happen for you unless you are willing to wait a year while you sort yourself out in order to apply, and even then there are no promises.</p>

<p>I wouldn’t take that bet, i think he was being as honest as he could.</p>

<p>I also think his level of self-confidence will do more for him than the shy and retiring attitudes of a minority of students on columbia’s campus. While he clearly has zero idea what it takes to A) get accepted to an elite institution and B) make a fortune, the world has not yet ground him down, so his naivete still has a fighting chance. Don’t be so quick to judge, all of ye. We’ve all been there.</p>

<p>Even if there was a “back door” into Columbia, why would the people who knew about it publicize it on CC? That would ruin the point, as it would no longer be a “back door” because everyone would know about it.</p>
