Sometimes I can’t get cellular service, like at work, so I would rely on wifi to send messages. That’s also the case when I am on a subway or abroad. Yes, you could switch over to other apps like skype, whatsapp, FB messenger, but it’s a pain to me. I like to do all of my IM on one app.
I can text my one and only friend who has an android phone from my iPad when it’s on Wi-Fi. What I like about iMessage is it tells me when the text is delivered, and when the recipient has read it, if they have their read receipts on. Just seeing that it is delivered gives me peace of mind when I’m sending it to another country.
With iMessage I can see when the recipient is writing a reply, so that tells me to keep alert for an incoming text. It’s especially pertinent in time sensitive discussions.
Also with iMessage I can text friends/family at home when I’m overseas as long as I’m on Wi-Fi. For some trips, this means I don’t have to pay extra for the abroad phone plan.
For going abroad why not just use What’s App
We use it for calls and messaging… No charges. Worked great for when the kids did their study abroad programs and actually the calls came in clearer.
Big advantage with Android is customization. On anything. Features that Android has had Apple is starting to use.
But to those that like the ecosystem then Apple is hard to beat.
Because there’s no need. I already have free messages and calls (via FaceTime) on Wi-Fi.
But if I want data, then I pay for service abroad. We like the convenience of having google maps available to give us directions and keep us from getting lost.
I’ve never used What’s App, but in general, don’t like to use apps for which my phone already provides the service.
I think you like what you’re used to. That doesn’t mean another choice is not good. Choices help individuals or groups (like families) find something that meets their needs best.
Most people aren’t going to pay big bucks, multiple product lines and keep coming back for more when they need to replace if they aren’t satisfied with the brand. You might have owned one Apple product and not been a fan or you might be on your 10th Apple product and be sold on the brand and products. People who own multiple Apple products aren’t coming back for more because there are no other choices - they are doing it because they like the brand, features, seamlessness between products or whatever.
I have unlimited also just a suggestion. On t-mobile abroad sometimes we find that what’s app just comes in clearer. It worked better for Southeast Asia and Israel for some reason then roaming or t-mobile did
I heard a podcast about right to repair. Much of it involves Apple, including the story about a $10 laptop cable that Apple offered to replace for $850 (there is a typo in the story on the website where it says $80). But they ultimately refused to repair it for any price because there was water damage.

Stories like this are what turns me off of Apple products. YMMV, but an Apple employee was the source of the information about the software glitch on iPhone 7. And yes, some customers were able to get support from stores, but many did not.
I’m not saying that there aren’t plenty of good reasons for people to be Apple fans. Just saying that saving money or the ability to repair hardware for those out of warranty aren’t among them.
Just an FYI - WhatsApp is owned by Facebook.
^^ True, and iMessage is owned by Apple, and probably phone manufacturers have access to our messages whether encrypted or not. We need legislation around this stuff.
Well, of course iMessage is owned by Apple - it comes with the device. But it was surprising to some folks I know who had no idea who owned what. I think Facebook now makes it a little more transparent that they own Instagram etc. but it was not the case a little while back. Just like Skype - now owned by Microsoft.
When I was abroad I used FB messenger through wifi.
Obviously nobody noticed that I got a new phone back on page 3. ?
@Lindagaf… That is old news… Enjoy… As you know on CC we discuss (didn’t say debate) EVERYTHING ?!
@thumper1 told you to enjoy your new phone @Lindagaf ! Or are you just thinking the thread should end when your question is solved/answered?
So are you enjoying your new phone yet?
This is the perfect quintessential old school CC thread. Where the question is answered the the debate continues
Makes me so happy, I’m enjoying the android v apple debate.
A total apple person but my one kid is total android.
@BunsenBurner — had no idea that people didn’t know that Facebook bought Whatsapp. But I don’t trust any of the internet behemoths.
@Lindagaf — we noticed! We just didn’t care. ?
Lol, people!
@abasket I’m kind of not enjoying my new phone because I’m techno-challenged and I have to learn a bunch of new stuff. I had a minor heart attack when my son told me today (I waited for him to come home- nice mom/son activity) that I need a different SIM card for the new phone, so I’ve literally only sent four texts so far. But apparently my new stylus can take photos and change the volume and select music, etc… So that’s cool.
I expect it will be about five years before I figure out how to do everything, like the last phone. So annoying, haha.
@Lindagaf lots of libraries have short classes to help teach the basics of both Android and Apple phones. I know people who have taken them and really been glad they did. The instructors/presenters are there with the intent that you need help! - and are glad to give it!
Here they are offered every month at our library branches and are only like an hour. So not too overwhelming.
I am not trying to direct this at any one person but for SOME PEOPLE, SOMETIMES saying “I’m technologically challenged” can be crutch - a reason to not have to learn or somehow feel you are bucking the tech changes and holding onto the fact that you just don’t need them.
You’re paying good $$ for a tool that can help you! You don’t have to know or want to know EVERYTHING a phone can do but why not reap some benefits from having it?
Don’t worry @abasket , I’ve been trying to figure out stuff for an hour now. I’ll get there.
