Getting Out Of A Disaster!

Currently I am in my freshman year at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, the place where it is should explain enough! There is just nothing to do here.

I didn’t choose to go here, I moved here in early October from Los Angeles because, my mom and I were having finacial troubles and needed to go somewhere where the economy wasn’t failing. I was bound for West LA College until we moved here, and once we found out that ULM’s requirements for entry were really low, we both just rolled with the situation.

Two months in my stay here, I’m just getting depressed! I plan on transfering out of here once this school year is over. I want to have fun…I mean I’m in college.

My question to you guys is: Do I stay in state and transfer to LSU for “fun”, or do I do what I want to do and, transfer back to California? If the latter, please tell me which university you suggest for “fun”.

I feel I’m obessed with partying, but at the same time, I am very consience of my grades.

I just read an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education that said if you graduated from a Cali HS and attended HS there for 3 years, then you qualify for in-state tuition at Cali colleges and universities even if you don’t live in the state any more. It’s due to the way they wrote the law to make it possible for illegally immigrated folks to get in-state tuition. Turns out more former Californians who are U.S. citizens are taking advantage of it than immigrants.

What can you afford to do? Are you going to Monroe because you can live at home and commute, so it’s affordable? Can you afford to pay for LSU’s tuition, room, board, and books?

As the above mentioned, you can get in-state in Calif, but you’d still need to have enough funding to pay for everything. Are you comfortable moving that far away from your mom? It sounds like you’d rather stay in-state in LA.

If LSU is affordable, then go. You’ll have a better time. But, DO NOT let partying interfere with your grades. The purpose of college is to get an education. :)

@lynxinsider: Thank you very much for sharing that! I honestly had no idea a law like that exists! Luckily I attended Culver City High School for all four.

@mom2collegekids: I don’t mind making the extra sacrifice to go to a college I love, so ANYTHING is not out of the question lol. Right now, I live in the dorms. For Louisiana residents, the tuition rate at LSU is maybe $8-9K per year.

I’m currently getting a decent income from the college radio station I work at, and I have been saving everything I have been getting. Hahaha, like I said, I am a good boy, have decent grades - but I feel I need to have fun. Nothing really occurs at ULM!

I think what you meant to write is the you are very conscious of your grades. You might want to order you activities as education – party, not the other way around.

Then you should apply to LSU.

But, be sure to manage your time well between academics and fun. LSU will kick kids’ tushies out if the partying leads to failing classes. ;)

AND…never drink and drive…ever. Call a taxi, if needed.

You didn’t say what you want to do. LSU can be fun, but an engineering degree will kick your butt as hard as anywhere. Also, LSU will set you up quite well in any number of fields. No, it’s not UCLA, but you will find that it is a degree thought of quite well in the real world. It won’t get you into Morgan Stanley, but it will get you into Exxon.
