Tennessee!
I guess all you people in the south sent the snow up to us - we are now expecting 12-18 inches after being told 5-8 all week (already have about 4 or 5 and the storm isn’t supposed to get bad until mid-afternoon through tonight). No icy rain for us - it was 4 degrees when I took the dog out at 11:00 and not expected to go over 18 for more than a week in the long range forecast. So all snow. Fortunately we do winter here and it should all be more or less cleared up by tomorrow afternoon at least on major and semi- major roads. Though even for us 18 inches is a real storm - 5-8 we barely notice. I went to the store yesterday afternoon and the shelves looked like they usually do on a Saturday afternoon; everyone knows they’ll be able to get to the store within hours after the snow stops.
Well there was a big gust of wind, ice and branches fell and we lost power and internet. The power is back on, but the internet is not. Message from Xfinity said it may…. MAY be restored in 3 hours.
We are getting more snow than expected. But we’ve had a temporary reprieve from the frigid temps before it gets cold again tomorrow.
Using my phone as a hotspot for a brief time to check a few things on the laptop. Started hearing trees come down at 5 am and had a few nearby transformers blow just after 7 am. Power still out in my building despite NES having been in site around 9 am, but evidently something kept them from restoring us. There is a nursing home almost next door which I think will make our area a little more of a priority. D’s family lost power around 7:30 and she texted that they got it back around 12:30, just after they finished moving their food essentials into coolers. It’s pretty chilly in my condo, so hoping to get power back before bedtime. Per NES, over 200,000 customers without power at around 10 am. Going to be a long road back with getting power back on and cleaning up downed trees & limbs. I’ve lived through this before in KY and had vowed to never be cold in my own home again. Obviously, I forgot that vow when I purchase an all electric condo! Stay safe, everyone!
You live on a lake ?
We took down most trees a few years back - so hopefully nothing major can hit our house.
So far it’s been ok but they say the freeze happens after the rain stops.
Walking distance. That’s Lake Michigan.
Is it above freezing? If not, watch out. Closest we came to having a serious accident was in conditions. We were just driving along as usual with our kids - then preschool ish ages - mad that it wasn’t snowing and just raining - while ignoring the fact that the temp was 24*. Next thing we knew we were spinning and spinning and spinning in circles across a 4 lane highway and bounced off the opposite side curb. We were unhurt - car included - but very shaken. It’s a busy road too, so we were super lucky nobody else was also on the road. Freezing rain is very deceptive.
Freezing rain is the worst! Just waiting to see if here in my part of NC we get what y’all got
We are home - hopefully the power stays on. I leave Tuesday afternoon - 3 hours to Knoxville and then Wed two hours to Asheville - so we’ll see.
D1 and SIL have been in their house in the suburbs of Hartford for 3 days (from SoCal). This is their driveway and backyard . SIL thinks they have about 8 inches of snow.
Their husky is loving the snow.Because of topography (I live at the mouth of NY harbor in Bay Ridge near the Verrazzano Bridge). my phone’s google weather app predicted less than an inch accumulation today and none tomorrow. Right now, it stopped completely. Photo taken outside my fourth floor window.
Cable is back but internet isn’t working. Xfinity scheduled an appt for tomorrow 5-7 pm. Hahaha. It will be dark and probably still very cold.
We went for a walk. I’d guess we have 2” maybe 3” of snow covered by ice. Walkng wasn’t bad because you didn’t sink. But this fell off our power sevice line. I’m glad it didn’t bring the line down with it
I have to say, in South Texas it was worse than the weather people predicted. It never got above freezing and there was sleet and ice all over the roads. And the temp is supposed to drop below 20 degrees tonight
. Sleet is especially dangerous here because it’s completely invisible until you slip, fall, or crash you car into something. I’m just happy for blankets and Netflix!
Tell me about it! I went outside to get a better look at how much ice was on my car. And I slipped and fell on completely invisible ice. Fortunately, only my pride was injured.
If any of you are wondering what to do with all that snow… DIL just sent us this pic (Annapolis area) of her bourbon cream espresso slushie made with real snow:
Man, she’s a keeper.
@busdriver11 inquiring minds are curious if you are on your way to BA? How’s the flights?
Contacted Xfinity and was able to successfully change our appointment tomorrow to the 3–5 p.m. window. Roads are hopefully supposed to be better after late morning so hopefully that will work. Tech-support tried everything to reach our modem and could not so admitted that it was probably something they needed to fix manually. Of course, the first representative I reached just tried to upsell me on Services which I politely declined, and waited for tech-support to pick up the line. The good news in all of this also is that the first sales person gave me the name of the promo she was pushing on me. We have a friend that works in the local Xfinity store so I emailed him with this promo to see if it would truly do us any good. If so, I’ll take advantage of it through him.
Yes! Made it to Atlanta, sitting in Delta One, drinking champagne and the flight is leaving on time! Weather is unspectacular in Atlanta, it’s stopped raining, no problems getting in or out of here. Glad I didn’t change our flights, because we got upgraded on cheap tickets for free, and we would be whining up a storm if we has lost these seats and were stuck in center seats in the back.
