Getting ready for snow this weekend?

Anyone getting ready for big snow this weekend? I’m not there, but my house is supposed to get 8-12 inches on Sunday into Monday morning. And it’s supposed to be mighty cold too.

I’m told folks are already stocking up on food etc in case they can’t get to the stores.

We are in southern New England. Anyone else?

We are in NC - hoping for more sleet mix than ice (=power outages). We are headed to southern FL for a cruise. We were supposed to leave Saturday but changed our flight to tomorrow so we can get out before it hits. :folded_hands: :folded_hands: that it’s not as bad for NC as forecasted and the power holds. My adult kids live here too and my oldest is almost 8 months PG. I’m worried about them being cold if the power goes out.

I’m in Hilton Head but fly home tonight. Wife told me she wants to go South tomorrow because of the big freeze in Nashville. To do what? To not be locked in at home if the power goes out. ehhh - I just assume stay home. We’ll see.

We’re in the DMV area and are expecting a lot of snow this weekend. We’ll probably go to Costco tonight to stock up on food. We’ll probably also need to fill up the gas tank, just in case.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow :slightly_smiling_face:

Snow will be south of us, though we are expecting -45 degrees with the windchills over the weekend. -2 as a real temp high tomorrow. I’d rather have the cold than the snow. I’d also rather it be 75 and sunny.

Massachusetts here- they are saying at least 6 but more likely 12”. I did a big Costco run last night and will do a regular grocery run today or tomorrow- praying for a snow day on Monday!!

Just bitterly cold for me but my D is in NC in the ice/snow/mix zone. She went to the market yesterday and has plenty of food and bottled water if they lose power.

Also live in the DMV area. We may get up to 24 inches of snow here.

And D1 is scheduled to work Thursday, Fri, Sat, Sun and Monday nights. Her dept supervisor already gave them the pep talk: no show = no job. He’ll fire any physician, mid-level or nurse who calls out because the weather conditions are too bad or it’s unsafe to drive. The hotel 3 blocks from the hospital is offering highly discounted rates to hospital staff during the storm so she may need to take that option if the roads are really dicey. D will take the 4 wheel drive SUV (which with its electric battery is a very heavy car) to work. Last winter, she drove the lighter, rear-wheel drive sedan and got stuck in a snow bank about 3 blocks from home.

We are making plans for the snow. I already bought 20 lbs of snow melt on Tuesday. Today I’m taking advantage of EInstein’s $9/dozen bagel special and buying 2 dozen. (One for us and one for D to take into work.) Then I’ll head to the grocery store to stock up on perishables. (Coincidentally, since it’s Thursday I can use my special grandma powers to get a 5% discount on groceries today.) I’ll be buying extra eggs, tortillas, frozen hash browns & cheese so I can make a dozen or two breakfast burritos for D to take into the ER staff on Friday or Saturday night—in case they can’t get home.

We’re charging both cars to 90-100% after they’ve been driven so both are fully charged at all times.

Lastly, SIL and I are making contingency plans in case we lose power. Since there are vulnerable groups in the house (kids under 6 and seniors–that would be me), it may not be feasible to stay at the house if the power outage is lengthy.

I have a farm. Horses stay warm by eating hay, so putting out more, staging more hay near the fields. And really really dreading this weekend. Like @WayOutWestMom s daughter, I HAVE to be outside, feeding and checking on the horses. Everything is harder in the cold and snow. It is awful. (ETA, plus, I am sick!)

We spent yesterday rearranging our trip to the south to see MIL. At first, we thought about leaving a day early to miss the snow through the mountains … but after reading about the potential for an ice storm at our destination, we decided it’s best to postpone the trip. Widespread power outages and icy roads are predicted, which means we might not get to visit even if we get there okay (she’s in assisted living, so we can’t stay with her). We don’t have issues with snow … we’ve been getting steady dumps of snow here on a regular basis, and it’s snowing again today … but driving through the mountains in a snowstorm and getting iced in at our destination are not appealing.

Our area forecast in southern VA keeps changing back and forth. Got up to 30” of snow a day or so ago. Now it seems the upper level warm whatever will be far enough north that we will likely see mostly freezing rain and 3-4” of snow. Of course, they say if the line shifts, it may all be snow and back to bigger accumulations.

Ice => easier to dig out from. Much greater risk of my power going out… I hope it’s more snow. Our power goes out all the time on clear sunny calm days. At least being in the middle of the city, we should get it back quicker than those in the rural areas… Hopefully before any pipes burst…

It’s also now supposed to start Saturday evening. Hoping to use our restaurant Xmas gift card before it hits/gets too bad.

Our area went from 18-24 inches predicted to now mostly ice and I’m super worried about power outages and frozen pipes. I would gladly take 24 inches of snow over 2 inches of ice. I’m still traumatized from an ice storm I experienced in college that sent a tree through the window and onto the bed where I was sleeping, ripped a hole straight through the side of the house when the power line was pulled out, and left power lines across my car/right at my doorstep. I was without power for 2 weeks after that and had to sleep on campus at the student union for several days. Really wishing this storm would shift south rather than north at the last minute so we get more snow than ice.

We are not predicted to have any snow but our wind chill could be up to minus 45 tonight! I am nervous about that especially living alone. If my power stays on, furnace doesn’t go out and pipes don’t freeze I’m fine. Plenty of food, drink and toilet paper in the house.

D just texted, I can go over there tomorrow if I want to get out. I am unsure if I want to leave my house in this cold and there are other factors here which concern me.

Stay safe and warm everyone. I’m really hoping it’s milder than predicted for everyone.

D1, SIL and GD just moved last week to North central CT from Southern California. They are actually staying in the house they bought for the first time tonight. The house only has the new furniture they purchased since they are waiting for the pod to arrive next Tuesday depending on the snow. Fortunately both D1 and SIL are still on maternity/paternity leave so they will both be at home during the storm. D1 said 6-12 inches are predicted for their area.

I’m in northern MA (although right now I’m at our place on the Cape - heading home this afternoon) and we expect anywhere from 6” to 2 feet. It’s going to be bitterly cold so the snow will be fluffy (and easier to shovel) but, then again, bitterly cold. We don’t actually expect anything until Sunday afternoon. It’s actually 40 and sunny right now.

Northern Ohio. In addition to sub zero temps the latest shows maybe 8-10 inches of snow which is nothing to sneeze at. It’s been a WINTER already.

I feel like at any point we can easily be fine with the food I have in the house for a week or more. But will it be the foods we WANT to have while stuck inside….

This weather makes me nervous for pets. The cold is dangerous, the snow is hard and salt to melt the snow is hard on their paws. Our pup (and us) are used to at minimum 2 good walks a day - I pray that people in this broad band of weather keep pets safe. :dog:

It has been crazy all week here in Nashville as people stock up on groceries & snow essentials. I am flashing back to 2009 ice storm in KY when we lost power for several days due to freezing rain and it has me trying to make a deal with Karma that I won’t complain about snow levels and being stuck for however long if I can just keep power. We are predicted to have .1” - .25” of freezing rain after a few hours of snow on Saturday before it swings back to snow and we may get up to 8”. I know there are people who get more and who deal better with it, but Nashville and other Southern places just aren’t prepared to deal with this kind of weather. Fingers crossed for everyone!

We were caught by surprise. We didn’t realize until yesterday that we’re expecting over a foot of snow.

My daughter was planning to head back to college after winter break on Sunday, but now we have to change plans quickly!

I am very VERY worried. I would take two feet of snow before 1” of ice, which is what we may be looking at here in Dallas.

Power outages, downed trees, pipes bursting. It is not something you can totally prepare for.
