I’m so excited! I’ve decided to come to Chicago. I was wondering whether any current students had an idea about what I should read or do in preparation for coming.

Congratulations.

To prepare: get warm clothes and a facebook

You’ll get mailings with information throughout the summer.

You will find many suggestions on the class of 2011 website. It will likely be <a href=“Class of 2024”>Class of 2024; when it becomes available. You can review the previous classes here: http://www.college.uchicago.edu/

i’m definitely going to make a thread on this towards the end of the summer - there are things that I wish somebody had told me to bring back when I was getting ready to come to college. Just simple stuff that ends up being incredibly useful, like surge protectors/extension cords and garbage bags. Also, Mario Kart. Oh, and reading Das Kapital wouldn’t hurt, either.

Aron - I assume that you will be flying in from Amsterdam. If a parent is not accompanying you (with a handy rental car), you should be able to manage a shopping trip to buy things that are too bulky/heavy to bring with you on the plane; there were a couple of these during my son’s O-week.

Items such as sheets, blankets and warm clothing may be purchased on line and shipped to your hall - rules for when these items can be sent will be included in the mailings. I believe that small refrigerators can be rented.

You buy trash bags, Jack? You’re in Max, right? We just use food take out bags from Bartlett. Free and effective. :)

Extension cords save my life.

oh don’t get me wrong, i use the food bags too - and the utensils, and condiment packets - i live off the stuff i take from bartlett sometimes. but if you’re clearing 50-60 empty cans (of, er, soda) out of your room after a saturday night you’re going to need the heftys.

That’s true. Full size trash bags are useful for certain types of trash. :)

Yes. We have a set-up stocked with salt and pepper shakers, napkins, spoons/forks/knives (plastic ones are useful–no washing required!), and, um, some other things used for eating that we’re planning on returning at some point.

oh yes. If your assigned dining hall is BJ or Pierce, many students bring tupperware with them to save food for later. Because BJ and Pierce are all-you-can-eat, some students will take food out with them to eat later. I’m not necessarily advocating this, as the dining hall is only comfortable with carry-outs up to “an ice cream and/or a piece or two of fruit,” but I’m saying that it’s done.

At Bartlett, it’s a non-issue, because you’re paying for everything you eat individually.
