Hi, I’m finishing up my freshman year and would like to study abroad in Australia my junior year. I was just wondering when should I start getting ready, and what should I do?

I would suggest that at the beginning of your 2nd year, or maybe even the end of your first, you find out what requirements your specific school has. For example, there are different deadlines and forms you have to fill out before you go abroad and it’s good to figure out your timeline. Start investigating where you would want to go. You need to apply the semester before you go abroad for most programs but may need to know in advance for your school.

LANGUAGES!!! If you know which country you want to do but won’t have at least 2 years of college-level language, you’ll need to apply to a summer language program this summer (or the next) so you can go.

If you want to go junior year, you would probably need to apply by Feb-March of your sophomore year. To start preparing before hand, I’d say start researching programs around the beginning (sept) your sophomore year. Have a program picked out, researched and ready to apply for by December.

by best advice i can give you is to talk with as many people you know to find out what you need to do.

i’ve planned a year before hand and now i am in a rush to get everything i need together because of minor details that you never thought to do.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I think I want to study down under anybody have any experience with that?

Don’t forget about checking out the timelines for visas and making sure your passport is current. Had some friends who forgot about those…
