Getting Recs as a Junior.

My school in order to ensure no one procrastinates to an excessive degree, requires as a junior I need to
a) Do Naviance
b) Get two recs from teachers
c) Formulate a list of 15 realistic colleges I will be applying to.

How do I go about this?

I know this is real early, but I feel like I need to think about it for awhile, like a real long while. I noticed on the Brown thread (one of the schools I am interested in) there is a seperate rec sheet just for brown. I’m planning on recycling recs for various schools… I really dont’ have the heart to ask a person to do multiple recs each for a different uni for one person.

I plan to ask my teachers in March for recs before an inundation of rec requests from procrastinators comes in.

If you do Naviance, you will find a ton of stats on past acceptances
from your school.

Naviance should tell you from your GPA and projected SAT (in case you only did NMSQT you can add ~100 for a realistic SAT score max) which
college scattergrams are matches and which are not. If you ahve a list
of two dozen colleges before you get to Naviance (Say the top 24 in
USNWR) then Naviance will help you anrrow it down to your
target number of colleges.

Erm I was mostly concerned about recs… and how to ask and whether I should go all out and write a formal letter. Thank you note etc.

Just ask your teachers in person if they will write a LOR for you, no need for a formal letter. Next fall, give the LOR forms for all of your schools to the teachers, they will modify the recs as necessary for the different formats. Although some schools have different forms, many will be the CA or something very similar (I thought Brown was converting to the CA this year??) Yes, a thank you during Sr year would be nice.

It’s great that your school GCs are being so proactive about the application process, it at least gets students thinking about it early on.
