Is this a good idea? A lot of Aspies would have the same difficulties I have, so one might think that Aspie communities aren’t the best places for social advice. But on the other hand, they would understand my situation more, and a lot of them have thought a lot about the social pitfalls that people like me fall to.

Sorry I just need an assessment from a third party that isn’t biased.

It’s not a good idea. If they knew how to solve their problems they probably would have solved them by now. They might offer comfort and sympathy, they might tell you that you need to accept yourself the way you are, but they won’t be able to help you solve your problems. Those communities are good for support, not for improvement.

^ i’ll second that. ><

You never know. To oversimplify it, a given group might have 10 shared barriers that they need to work around. If each person knows how to solve 1 of those barriers on their own, chances are there will be a significant amount that doesn’t overlap. You might be able to receive support from someone who has say, figured out how to interact with professors, and in turn might be able to help them with say interacting in a study group.

I don’t know about that. I do suspect CC is not the best place to get aspergers advice.
Not everyone who is an aspie is utterly socially hopeless, and those that are more skilled can be the best teachers to those less skilled because they understand the fundamental barriers in communication that cause the social problems when most neurotypical people either do not or cannot, and know how to surmount them. It would just depend on the community you’re talking about I guess, and you’d have to get enough varied opinions to be able to judge what’s really right. That’s very doable, but it depends on the specific person and on the community.

There are some aspergers communities that have social group meetings led by therapists and such, which ALSO have neurotypical people to come in and socialize as well. I think that kind of a situation could be the best of both worlds.
