Getting Started?

I just got a new job with this local marketing company that sells cutlery. They claim that they are not telemarketers or door to door vendors or any species of obnoxious advertising. They say their products sell by “word of the mouth,” so customers spread the word and reps only approach interested parties.

Now, that’s all peachy, but starter reps have to do practice demonstrations with family and family friends. That might be a little awkward. My mother doesn’t really know many housewives in the area, so we don’t have that many family friends, just a lot of acquaintances. The main problem though is how can I shake off the awkwardness and make my practice demos less of a infomercial? How should I approach those family friends?

I really just want to get out of the circle I know and sell to interested strangers, but to do that, I need referals from the friends I demo to.

Any advice? Someone who’s done this?
