Getting too confident for Freshman year?

I was very scared at first, for I had heard the rumor of Debate having mounds of homework and Latin having tons also, but then I asked actual students, and they all said both classes were easy A’s and minimal homework.
Then I was scared for Math, but then I figured I could Kahn Academy a lot of the work in advance this summer to help me get a small head start when we start new subjects!

The students said the classes were overall easy, but getting a 4.0 means no messing around, which I believe I can do since my hardest subjects are now turning into the easier ones!
Not to mention 4 study halls one semester (a week,) and 6 the other one!

Now my fear is overconfidence, and that I will get mauled next year for that.

As long as you’re determined to succeed but treat your peers friendly you should be alright.

I’m a former debater (I’ve graduated already) and I don’t think you have much to worry about as a novice. Most novice depend on research work already done by more advanced members. Most of the time is spent learning debate tactics and research skills for when you go higher up and have to help the new kids in return.

Latin usually depends on the teacher but as long as you memorize your vocab words and declensions you’re good.

Doesn’t really sound to me like you’re overconfident. It sounds like your excited and planning ahead which is good! Just remember to not stress yourself too much and to ask for help when you need it. Sometimes those are the two hardest things you can do.

Eh, it’s not that hard. You adjust quickly.

all you need is self-motivation which it looks like you have. if it’s a priority you can achieve it

Thanks you guys so much, it eases my nerves!
What classes should I be getting ready for?

Try to take a “fun” class rather than a study hall.
Make sure you have 1 of each core: English, Math, Social Science/History, Science, Foreign Language.

Oh my gosh, I’m morosely excited for you, just because I remember having the same emotions regarding high school and my future a year ago. Unfortunately, my first year of high school did not live up to my expectations, but it’s not too treacherous. It really depends on the teachers you have, but I found that math (Common Core Math 2 Honors or the equivalent of Geometry Honors) and biology were the two classes I really had to work for. That being said, I was (it sounds like) a lot like you, and I pulled a 97 as a final grade in math and I hope to make a 96 as a final grade in Bio.

You’re going to have to study for your foreign language; there’s no getting past that, but it’s not too bad if you excel in English. It’s great that you’re already focusing on a particular elective… I took Intro to Communications as my only real elective (since I took Gym and Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 this year) which was pretty cool, not only because of the eccentric (read: hilariously perverted) teacher but also because I’m really looking forward to working on my school’s newspaper staff.

Okay, sorry, I got a little carried away reflecting over my freshman year. Anyways, I think you sound like you have a great high school future… I wasn’t certain I would pull all A’s, but I was determined to strive to do the best I could in all subjects, and if you’re determined as well, you typically won’t have anything to worry about.

Well, it must be a good sign I am acting like this if you are a straight A student!
Thanks for the tips, another reason why I DID Latin was to help in English

I will be a freshman next year as well! I’m kind of in the same boat as you… lots of anxiety about HS. But I’m also very excited!

ikr, I have no idea what to think!

Watch MYOS’s advice. If the fun classes hurt your WGPA, you should really think twice about taking them.

Weighted GPA isn’t very important because all high schools weight GPA differently. It only matters for class rank. Even then, if a system punishes you for taking a class rather than a study hall, there’s something wrong with that system. Colleges should take that into account.

^@halcyonheather I meant it in the context you described. People taking, say band, instead of a study hall have a lower class rank at my school. Really stupid and illogical system, in my opinion.

My school does not have class rank by the way
How can one get over a 4.0 in a non-weighted GPA? I have heard there are ways

Unweighted just means it doesn’t take into account whether your classes were honors or regular. It can still be on a non-4.0 scale.
