Getting Your Foot in the Door @ Research Centers

Hi Again,

So, the career path I’m seriously considering is Educational Policy. This path basically requires a lot of research.

I don’t have a problem getting hooked up with professors on education policy research projects. My school has programs that set up mentoring relationships for URM students(faculty mentorship). I know how to contact professors etc…

But I would like to work on a project for my campus’ Education Policy Center, but don’t know how to get my foot in the door. Should I e-mail them, asking if they need projects that need help? Should I go to their yearly symposium and try to network that way?

I want to intern at an Education Policy Center to pick up key skills before I graduate. I don’t mind starting off stuffing envelopes, but would like to eventually publish a policy report. I think doing so give me those key skills for landing a job after graduation and in grad school.

Any advice?

I would send an email detailing your interests and ask if you can meet with someone to discuss possible opportunities when you arrive on campus.

Thanks for the advice. So it’s basically like e-mailing a Profe.

:)
