Just back from “The Gettysburg Experience,” an admitted students event at Gettysburg College. We were very glad this was offered at this early point in the cycle, as DD will be busy in rehearsals for her final HS spring play on April 13, which is the date of the main admitted student event, Get Acquainted Day.
Our previous favorable impressions of Gettysburg were confirmed… just a really nice school and community. After a short welcome speech, they had all the students attend a 10 AM class of interest (per a survey they filled out on registration for the event), while parents stayed back for a presentation. DD very much enjoyed her public policy class, helped along by the professor personally reaching out via email the day before and even sending a link to a TED talk that was the focus of the discussion for the class, which DD listened to on the drive up to Gettysburg. Class sizes are really small there, just 15 students were in this class, with 7 visiting admitted students. DD participated in the discussion and was complimented by one of the current students on her insights, which absolutely made her day!
There was a student panel for an hour answering questions from the audience, then we had lunch at the dining hall. Gettysburg is known for having great food, and I have read lots of raves on CC and other sites about the Servo (cafeteria) cookies. Still, it’s a college cafeteria, so I went in with very low expectations, which were completely blown away! I had a three-cheese panini with tomato basil soup, both of which I would gladly have again any day. The salad bar and fruit bar were full of interesting and very fresh looking ingredients. And the cookies… WOW… totally worthy of the hype and the calories. If I had access to them every day I would probably gain 10 pounds! Chocolate chip fresh out of the oven with high butter content. Our tablemates needed to opt for the gluten free version and they were equally as impressed. Overall, WINNING on food for sure!
After lunch, there was another panel with the President being interviewed by two seniors. All three very impressive and relatable. We left at that point, skipping out on the tours as DD has already done a tour and a week-long camp there. Missed out on the post-tour reception.
A great experience and another strong contender for DD’s #1.
