Gift for a kid going off to boarding school

A child of a close family friend leaves for boarding school next week, and we’re going to a goodbye party. I’d like to get her a token goodbye gift, but I’m lost for ideas. Any good ideas?

If there is a good fast food restaurant near the school (Chipolte, Panera etc), a gift card would be good.

Thanks for the idea. She’s entering 8th, and I don’t think the school lets the 8th graders off campus unless it’s an organized outing, so I’m not sure she’d get to use the card.

I was thinking maybe something for the long ride up?

iTunes gift cards are always good.

8th GRADE? Poor baby. That is so young to be send away!

Agree ITunes or GooglePlay (if she has an Android phone).

Amazon gift card - she can buy books, music, or anything with it

How about a gift certificate to a place where she can buy a poster for her room? You might need to check with her mom to see if they can hang stuff up… but my D loved getting a gift card from allposters.com so she could get what she wanted for her room at home, and I know she would love one for her dorm room as well.

Don’t give her anything now. Send her a postcard every week or so instead.

I’d think along the lines of a summer camp care package…cute flashlight, bright highlighters, band-aids in fun designs, or candy to share.
I agree with dmd77 that a surprise treat in her school mailbox in a couple of weeks will be much appreciated.

Edited to add: my teen daughter says that day-glo nail polish would be a good choice!

C. Wonder seems to appeal to 8th and 9th grade girls. They have great cardigans in a variety of colors which are reasonably priced. For something more personal I would go for the enamel initial cuff bracelet. Perfect for boarding school and again reasonably priced. Every purchase is gift boxed so you are ready to go.
