Gifted Ideas for House Bound Teenage Boy

My nephew who will be a HS sophomore this fall just had scoliosis surgery. He is an active boy who just finished his eagle scout project. He will have to spend the rest of the summer in the house and then no physical activity for 6 months.

I want to send him a care package. I figure computer and video games are covered, so I am looking for ideas, all I can think of is board games.

A Netflix subscription and a deck of cards?

Books, Amazon gift cards, maybe a Hulu or Amazon subscription if he doesn’t have one… Is he into anything “crafty” like woodworking that he could do with his hands? I’d actually stay away from board games, as they require multiple people to play and realistically, he will probably be spending a good chunk of time alone and the time that he is with people talking, eating, etc.

iTunes gift card.

Cards and a book on card tricks. A book on dollar bill origami. Electronic chess set. Graphic novels or comic books.

Jigsaw puzzles

If he’s at all artistic, paper and pastels, charcoal, acrylic paints markers.

And yarn and knitting needles or a crochet hook, and a book of instructions.

How about something to build - like a model or one of those fancy adult lego sets.

A subscription to a magazine he might enjoy such as Sports Illustrated, Outdoors, Teen Ink or gaming magazines.

Mad magazine is still around and subscriptions are pretty reasonable.

Coloring books and colored pencils

Teach him to knit! Seriously I had a guy friend who was in traction for weeks and he knit scarves when he got tired of reading.

My kids would have been happy with jigsaw puzzles and a lego set.

A guitar.

What physical limitations does he have from the surgery?

Guitar is the best idea! Or, if size and expense is an issue, a ukulele!

Get a book that teaches him how to drum.

Hey, it worked for Ringo, who, learned how to drum because he was bored during a 2-year hospital recovery from tuberculosis, so you never know where it could lead

Thanks for all these great ideas. We are not local so I will run some of these ideas by his Mom

Not sure about his physical restrictions, just know he has to stay inside and maybe sometimes go to the deck or front yard.

I’d make sure you check what physical limitations he might have before considering something like a guitar.

Good luck! I don’t have any ideas but I do know how much it sucks to be homebound as a young person.

ETA: actually I did think of something. I know you say he has games covered but see if he might like a subscription to Gamefly. It’s like Netflix for games.

You said he’s an Eagle Scout…

get him a fly tying kit.
