Anyone knows anything about Gill St. Bernard - a k-12 prep school in Pepack/Gladstone in NJ? How is it compared to Pingry, Lawreceville and Peddie?

Well, It certainly doesn’t compare to Lawrenceville and Peddie.

It doesn’t make much sense to compare a K-12 “prep” school to a 9-12 boading school anyway

why? don’t some schools offer lower grades and their actually pretty good?
They send their graduates to some good universities like cornell, georgetown etc.
Plus isn’t it a day school and in new-york??

I wasn’t looking at the boarding aspect, just comparing which one would be best environment in laying the foundation of an individual in anticipation of a productive life ahead.

Gill St Bernard is in NJ. From what I can tell, they appear to have more advanced program than Pingry, and it’s niche is to be a small school (around 30-60 graduate seniors). Yet, it doesn’t seem to be as well known from the searches I tried on this board. I haven’t been able to find much info online on the school, but from speaking with several people, I have heard positive comments, but I have yet to have heard any critical comparison of these schools. From what I can tell, I am guessing it’s remote location probably hinders it’s reputation?

Another thing I wander is - are the various more prestigious schools - are they more prestige than substance?

Some schools seems to heavily focus on sports, some on academics, yet some seem to be touching on foundations for leadership development. I’m not sure how the Gill St Bernard, Pingry, Lawrenceville and Peddie are viewed?

Almost all the discussions on this board have been focused on boarding schools. That is why you will find Lawrenceville and Peddie but probably not the other 2 schools you are considering. Have you visited the schools? It’s really a matter of which schools feel right for you at this stage in your life. Fit is far more important than prestige. If you live close enough, you might want to consider Blair.

GSB is a fine day school, but it is not considered to be on the same level as Pingry, Delbarton and Newark Academy. Peer schools include Rutgers Prep and Morristown Beard, among others. GSB is located in the Somerset Hills, which is an extremely affluent area.

yes, visited, and the atmosphere feels very different.

What in particular sets Pingry/Delbarton/Newark Academy to be on different level than GSB?

I just think GSB is less competitive and less intense than the other three; that may be a good thing.

What kind of kids are suitable for Gill St Bernard vs the other schools? Any well accomplished alumni graduated from that school? I’m trying to figure out and understand ‘fit’…

MAPLPARENT - can you elaborate on your thinking?

Thanks!

Gill has a strong running program, if you care about that at all.

Thanks MomofWildChild.

Aside from the running program, what other areas are they strong in (academics, sports, arts, etc…)? and how would they compare to Pingry (lower, middle and upper schools)?

I think Pingry’s better.

PurpoisePal - thanks…but any factual comparisons?

A few years ago (2003) a list came out of the best public and private schools in America. Roxbury Latin was #1, Brearly was #2, Dalton was #5, Exeter and Andover were 10 and 11 I think. My school was on the list, as well.

Pingry was on that list, and GSB wasn’t. The list was based upon % acceptances to HYP. I know that doesn’t always mean the school is better, like in cases where schools have a lot of kids that donate and stuff like that, but generally, the list is good to determine the prestige of each school. I mean, the top 100 schools are all really close to each other in prestige (not location) but if the school is part of that list, then it’s gotta be good. The schools that aren’t on the list probably aren’t as good.

I’d send you the link, but I lost it when I got a new computer…

If you ever find it, please send it to me. :)
