So my girlfriend is attending SUNY Stony Brook in the fall and it’s two weeks till her move in, but she does not have a loan yet. She comes from a very messed up family and it’s like her and her family to procrastinate stuff like this till the last minute. Her father is seperated from the mother, and my girlfriend lives with her mother. Her mother was rejected for a private loan so only yesterday did they send in the request for the Parent PLUS loan. I’m really worried that things won’t process in time and my girlfriend will be attending a school she has no means of paying for. There is the off chance that her father can pay out of pocket should the time come, but he wanted her to get a loan. The main problem with my gf is that she is an only child and neither parents went to college so this is all new to her and her family. Her parents have no idea of what the college process is like and how important it is that deadlines be met. If my girlfriend goes into college without the loan secured what will happen?

If your girl friend doesn’t have the money, she won’t be going to college. She will not be moving into the dorms, her registration will be placed on hold. Amy classes that she Is registered for will be dropped. If mom I’d turned down for plus loan she cam get an unsubsidized stafford loan. How much is the shortfall!

^^^ right. There’s no way she will be able to start college and move in without paying. Colleges have a strict deadline and you cannot pay late. For example at my son’s school the last day to pay and confirm classes is this Sunday, August 14 at 7pm. At 7:01pm the college will hit a button and everyone who has’nt paid is out…simple as that.

The parents may not know how the process works. However, it is in your GF’s interest to talk to the FA office at SUNY and keep the updated. They may have suggestions as they know the situation better than any of us. Again, they may not be able to help if it is due to the fact that parents and the student missed deadlines etc. or did not do things in time, but talk to the FA office.

How much is she short? If the mom is denied a Parent Plus loan, your GF should contact FA to request an additional $4K in (unsubsidized) Stafford loans.

Most schools have a payment plan…that may be an option if the dad can’t come up with the full amount at once. Schools have different policies regarding balances and it’s not an automatic disenrollment at my D’s SUNY if there is a balance when classes begin. They simply place a hold on the student’s account that prevents them from registering for the following semester (so I’m told…no personal experience with this). She should definitely have a conversation with the aid office and find out what their policies, and her options, are. Good luck to her!
