<p>I’ll bet that all Engineering schools have a similar flame-height rule, probably right alongside maximum electric current draw limits for any experiments.</p>

<p>Maybe so, ALF, but the flame-height rule at Mudd actually has to do with the West dorm’s penchant for burning things, especially on Guy Fawkes Day. I’ve heard the rule was put in place after a false-alarm call from Scripps.</p>

<p>During prefrosh orientation or admitted students program (I forget which), Maria Klawe sat at my son’s table for dinner and juggled with him afterward.</p>

<p>The 5C’s are a great place and President Klawe is awesome. Mudd is a fabulous school that encourages the quirky and the risk-taker. Both are necessary for creative science. And skateboards are part of the tradition. My son, not much of a skateboarder before Mudd, has gone through two skateboards since he started. It is a standard means of transportation there – except for the unicycles. And this year, the entering class is 52% female. Quite an accomplishment for a STEMS school.</p>
