Okay I am a mom of four boys, so the whole girl thing is out of my realm. I went to our highschool girl’s volleyball game and was appalled at the uniforms. The shorts were so short you could see butt cheeks on some of the girls. I really felt for the larger more muscular girls as the little shorts looked awful on them.
My question is why do the shorts have to be that short? Couldn’t they be form fitting but a little longer?

They used to be a lot more revealing - more like bikini bottoms than bike shorts. Some of the European countries still wear the bikinis.

The school should be able to order shorts of all sizes, but some girls like the look of very short shorts.

The girls like them that way. Also aside from liking them short they also like to roll the waistband down. Though now you can also order low rise vball shorts.
Last year my D played a Christian school and they had longer shorts on.

If you want a real eye opener, go to a women’s beach volleyball game.

I don’t like to see the girls wearing the indoor shorts too short or too tight, I’m not sure why there isn’t a little bit more fashion control.

BTW, back in the dark ages when I was in college, our volleyball team wore ‘bun huggers’, they covered the whole cheek on everyone, but I reckon they looked like we were wearing briefs. I must admit, they took some getting used to, but they were very comfortable to play in.

As we were from California (on the cutting edge of volleyball fashion), we were one of the few teams wearing them at the Nationals. I remember getting some creepy looks from some of the people in the midwest. :o

One reason for the short-ness: longer shorts will bind—vb players have to bend and get so far down to the floor and binding is not desirable. Some teams in my area wear biker shorts/spandex rather than the short-short shorts. Karen, you and I must be from the same era…I also wore the ‘bun huggers’ back in the dark ages! We thought we were such trend-setters!

My daughter was on volleyball in middle school- they looked like bike shorts- in high school- she wasn’t on the team ( very competitive)- but we went to several of the games- the shorts were more like what they wear for track.

I know several of the teams- do not have money to buy uniforms every year- and some girls do not have money to pay for their own. For swimming for example- they wore speedo type suits- but while my d has an enviable body type- the uniforms are not going to be flattering on every one- but that isn’t really their purpose- I think they should be covered, but they should also be comfortable and be able to move.

My daughter plays high school volleyball and they have to order spandex shorts. They are more form fitting than shorts of yore and are somewhat shorter, but they seem to fit fine and don’t seem too obscene or anything. Maybe they have to fit right; or maybe I’m just used to them!

That’s the current style. I remember basketball and tennis shorts for the boys were very short and tight back in the 70s. Now they are extra baggy and long. BRING BACK THE 70s!

The men beach volleyball guys play in long and baggy. The women play in bikinis. What uniform do the Olympic indoor men play in?

^^^ Longer and sleeveless shirts.

Yeah, Daughter’s are quite short. I have a hard time telling her cheer “bloomers” from her volleyball “shorts.” Daughter is about 5" tall and we buy her a 34" inseam in jeans, so that’s a LOT of leg showing in those volleyball shorts…thank goodness for the knee socks.

I think the men should not wear shirts ;)

Not the HS guys, but the adults!

^^^ I agree! Men’s volleyball was one of my must-see events. I lost many an hour of sleep watching them. :D

Unfortunately, this is part of the reason why I never played volleyball. I’d probably be considered one of the “larger, more muscular girls” and would have looked ridiculous wearing spandex shorts…

I kind of wish I’d played, but oh well.

speaking as a person that has spent the past 6 years in vball shorts, if they’re black they aren’t bad, and they’re suprisingly comfortable… but any other color is unfortunate (white and red are the worst, though i’ve got to admit that my forest green uniform with the matching green spandex longsleeve top was pretty awful)

When are parents going to take a stand against the early sexualization of girls- skimpy volleyball and cross-country shorts, revealing drill team or cheerleading outfits with routines that are bump and grind, etc.?

Probably when these things have something to do with “sexualization”?

If bikini sized bottoms are needed for the freedom of movement, why are boys wearing so much more fabric? They wouldn’t be caught dead in speedo sized shorts or swimsuits.

And you can be sure the male fans in the stands are watching the student female athletes with more on their mind than sports performance.

bike short type shorts- don’t have to be " too tight", it actually is much more flattering if you are on the muscular side to wear close fitting clothing-

similar to what Ds school team wore.

Boys are just as conscious of their appearance as girls- IMO- they lean towards baggy for several reasons.
Most teen boys not really have the legs to wear spandex- if they did- believe me- they would be first in line except for their anatomical " quirk", that perhaps makes them prefer baggier the better even if they have well developed quads.
;)

D’s volleyball team wears spandex shorts, as does virtually every team in our area. They have a sufficient inseam that no one’s “butt cheeks” are showing. Most girls pull the legs fully down, others tend to bunch them up in the front - whatever is comfortable for them.

I’m not sure how it started or evolved, but spandex shorts are pretty standard for girls’ volleyball as far as I can tell. They work well for the type of movement the girls do. If the shorts were baggier, they’d be worried about people “seeing up” them. If they were baggier and longer, like basketball shorts, it might create a problem when they dive and slide on the floor, which they do frequently. I’m not sure how guys deal with diving.

Our uniform tops have cap sleeves and a small collar around the back of the neck. I’ve never seen a low-cut volleyball top, most are simply sleeveless shirts.

The girls are dressed to play their sport; not for sex appeal.

What makes no sense to me is the plaid skirts that most field hockey teams wear. Wouldn’t basketball shorts work better? But that’s the tradition. Same with spandex in v-ball.

Field hockey dresses make NO sense at all!
