ACT: 26 - not the best test taker
GPA: 3.9
Classes: Honors
Rank: Top 20%

Ethnicity: White

Extra: LAX, Editor-in-Chief of School newspaper, Staff Writer for 247sports.coms (age 17), article published in national magazine Lindy’s Sports (Did the story on Jordan Kovacs, Michigan Safety), great recommendations, bunch of other randoms clubs and orgs.

Location: Ohio

Other: I basically suck at Math and Science, and I strive at writing and English. I understand I don’t match up to the average “brain-box” that goes to Michigan, but I really want to go there. I’m pretty much the only person I know that gets paid to write for a HUGE website at such a young age.

Any “back doors” into Michigan? Easiest college to apply too? Obviously, it doesn’t look good for me getting in straight up.

I would say you are a reach. If the GPA is weighted, then you are substantial reach. If you get admitted, it will be in spite of the ACT score rather than because of it. There are high GPA students who get in with your score but that does not necessary mean that you will be one of them. A lot of it will depend on your course rigor, what a 3.9 means at your high school and what U-M thinks of your high school. Being OOS will make it more difficult with your stats. Writing an article on Jordan Kovacs isn’t going to be enough but your extra-curricular activity does not hurt.

You should probably apply either to LSA or Kinesiology. I would tie your essays to your sportswriting experience - it appears to be what makes you you. I would also do some research on The Michigan Daily - you seem to fit the mold of a Daily Sports Editor and you could impress an admissions officer if you do some homework on this.
