assignment:Is it best for people to accept who they are and what they have, or should people always strive to better themselves?

Once there was an excellent college student, who was only 19 and studied in Law School of Harvard University, gave up his college life in the second year of his new academic career. If he had normally graduated from the law school, he would have been a successful lawyer as well. However, he did not enjoy his “smooth” and “bland” life and made up his mind to challenge himself. Finally, he changed the world while stating” Every computer all over the world is using Microsoft’s software.” Undoubtedly, he is Bill gates, who strove to better himself and harvested “the richest man” for 9 years. Hence, I reckon that, we should challenge ourselves and strive to better ourselves. The following examples of Franklin D Roosevelt and Beethoven can support my opinion strongly.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945), the only U.S. President elected to more than two terms, was a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic crisis and world war. His combination of optimism and economic activism is often credited with keeping the country’s economic crisis from devolving into a political crisis. He led the United States through most of World War II, and died in office of a stroke, shortly before the war ended. Behind all this terms of his great, Roosevelt suffered from serious Polio during his all Presidency and could not walk even a few steps without dependence on his son or assistants. He did not give away to his fate; he did not give away to the Devil of Death; he did not give away to Hitler. In the end, Roosevelt, who has strived to better himself, defeated his election opponents, illness and Hitler, winning all people’s respect.

Beethoven, who also strove to better himself, is the greatest German composer in 18th century. He was a crucial figure in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western classical music, and remains one of the most acclaimed and influential composers of all time. He probably began to go deaf after what he called his “terrible typhus” of 1797, but he tried to keep it a secret. So he did not tell it to his friend until he was diagnosed that he would never recover in 1801. However, his adoration to art and lift defeated his personal pain and desperation, while he strove to another better himself, such disaster was altered into his inspiration of composing. And with the Ninth Symphony, Beethoven’s struggle for art and better himself was in vain.

President Roosevelt and Beethoven have shown us which way was right, and we should follow their spirit of always striving to better ourselves.
