Give me some suggestions to put me on the right path?

<p>I’m a freshman, and I would love to attend schools like Georgetown, William and Mary, Columbia, Emory, George Washington, American, and Emerson. I would major in Political Communications, PoliSci, Journalism, or some combination thereof.</p>

<p>Female, Georgia, Native American.</p>

<p>I go a competitive, US News Honored arts school where my major is communications.</p>

<p>My freshman year GPA to date is 97.7 and my weighted GPA is a 99.8. (High honor roll)</p>

<p>On the PSAT I scored a 59 in math, a 64 in reading, and a 69 in writing.</p>

<p>Next year, I’m taking APUSH and I will take at least 2 AP classes per year after that.</p>

<p>As for extracurricular activities…</p>

<p>I’ve been participating in Odyssey of the Mind for 5 years, and my team has placed at the state level.
I am a member of our school’s very active Future Business Leaders of America chapter, in which I am the reporter-elect. (The reporter is in charge of communication within the chapter and publicity.) I also competed in the Intro to Business Communications category and placed 7th in the state. Eventually, I would like to be a state officer of FBLA.
I expect to be invited to NHS and Beta Club (Similar to NHS, but requires a higher GPA.)
I am a member of our school’s Making a Difference club.
I’ll be taking Journalism next year, which is very selective class. Because of this, I will be on the newspaper staff, as well as our literary review staff. I have two pieces published in this year’s literary review.
I expect to be invited to our school’s student ambassador club.</p>

<p>As for volunteer experience, I have a hodgepodge of about 20 hours so far, but I will be working hard this summer at our public library, and want to amass at least 100 hours working there.</p>

<p>I’m wondering if my ECs are on-par. Should I drop Odyssey of the Mind, which is VERY time-consuming, for something like Mock Trial, Model UN, or Student Government? Also, any other suggestions, like schools I should look into would be much appreciated.</p>

<p>I will be a freshmen at Emerson College next year so maybe I can offer some help. These are all top schools with low acceptance rates. If it helps you at all at least regarding Emerson, I got a 1900 on my SATS, took two APS, submitted multiple student produced movies and participated in my fair share of community service, extra Cs and varsity basketball. Emersons acceptance rate is around 37 percent. It is much harder to get into that American University and around the same difficulty as George Washington. Obviously all the other schools are fantastic as well, and extremely difficult to get into! I would say that in order to get into any of these schools you will need to work really hard. I can speak for Emerson when I say the school is looking for very artistic creative kids; They have a strange acceptance policy, I have seen kids with low SAT scores and great writing, theater or film skills get in, and people get rejected who go on to go to Princeton.</p>

<p>Since it is SOOO early and hard to gauge, instead of “chancing” you, I’ll give you some constructive criticism and advice.</p>

<p>1) Your GPA is fantastic. UW is great, but Weighted worries me a little bit. Just because it isn’t much higher than UW, so that may indicate you haven’t taken the hardest course load possible. If that IS the case, it needs to change lol. Take the hardest course load possible, because you can handle it. </p>

<p>2) Your PSAT score is not Columbia material, but for a FRESHMAN it is EXCELLENT! You do not want that score on your actual SATs that you send to college, but that is a fantastic start. Here was my PSAT score JUNIOR year:
CR: 65, M: 69, W: 58, T: 193
I was disheartened by this a lot, but I did some practice tests and just remained confident. On my SATs in one sitting I got:
CR: 770, M: 790, W: 760, T: 2320
Improvement for you is essential, but also almost guaranteed.</p>

<p>3) You’re Native American!! That’s a HUGE hook, so that’s a big deal in the college process. </p>

<p>4) Your ECs are good. Volunteer more, get leadership activities. The holy trinity of ECs is: Sports, Clubs, and Volunteering. If you can do well in all of these, you’re set.
Maybe you could join track? If you do one sport season that will help a lot, but if it isn’t you’re thing then you’ll still be fine.</p>
