given these scores, does it make sense to switch from sat to act prep?

Hi,

My D will be a junior in the fall, she has a very high gpa. Her first sat practice scores as a sophomore were very promising: m:680 r:670 w:670. But after about 40 hours of prep work, she’s only been able to break 700 in reading. Out of frustration, she took a practice ACT last weekend: english: 31, reading:35, science: 36, math: 36. She answered all the match and science questions correctly, so there’s some room to make mistakes there.

how does that compare to an sat score? it seems to us she should switch to the act but I’m not sure how hard it is to increase her english score…or how her current score compares to an sat score.

Well with those scores, the composite ACT score would be a 34.5, which would round up to a 35. A 35 on the ACT is roughly somewhere around a 2290–2370 on the SAT, according to the ACT website. So if your daughter does similar to the way she did on the practice test on the actual ACT, I’d say it would make absolute sense.

@quietdesperation Yes, based on only what you posted, the ACT appears to be the better test for her. Consider having her take the ACT in September and if you can put that score in the books, and worry about the SAT at a later date (if at all).
