Global Young Leaders Conference

Right, so I know there have been threads similar to this one, but I still can’t seem to get a straight answer. I just received an invitation to the Global Young Leaders Conference, and I have to say, even with the price, it sounds fascinating. I would absolutely love to represent my country as a future leader while discussing topics such as peace and international relations, especially since these are subjects which are apparent in day-to-day life here in Israel. My question is, putting the money aside for a moment (not that it isn’t an issue), what kind of experience would I be receiving? I really do aspire to be a future leader and role model. Would this be a good forum to start out my experience? All the information I’ve gotten is it’s a lot of money to meet interesting new people and listen to boring speeches. As someone who actually doesn’t mind listening to speeches, and usually finds them stimulating, even if the person isn’t the best speaker – would this be for me? The sample US program sounds intellectually stimulating. Maybe I’m delusional, but I feel like getting a chance to have a private tour of the UN and and meet with other future leaders from across the globe to have peace talks and humanitarian issues panels is not something you fall across every day. I would be thrilled at having an opportunity to get my name out there and get my opinions heard by those who matter at this age. I really do feel like I have a lot to say.

My question is – is there a place where I could possibly find this? I’ve heard that the program is not quite as selective or prestigious as it makes itself out to be, and I’m ok with that – but will I, quite honestly, be hanging around with a bunch of bored teenagers who couldn’t really care less about solving the world’s issues?

Thanks a ton in advance!

The general sentiment is that your suspicions about programmes such as this are correct. It’s a bunch of rich people who want a resume item and time without parents. You honestly won’t get your name out there with anyone, and it’s a waste of your money. These things are sent as mass mailings to basically every bright student these companies can find.

It won’t be a particularly rewarding experience, especially given the money involved.
