Gloves for New England weather

Would you please recommend good gloves for someone who likes to go on a long walks, but unable to do so in 14 degrees New England weather? The nice leather gloves I sent my DD don’t work and as a Californian I obviously don’t know much about cold weather gears .

Not gloves!! Mittens! Nice heavy ones. Mittens allow the fingers to warm each other up.

Any ski shop will have great gloves or mittens. Also, get glove liners; dual layers also help keep warmth inside.

Mittens work better, and ski mittens are the best. Get ones with the little pockets you can put those warming things in. They are little packets that go inside the pocket in the gloves.

I walk in 14 degree weather. For long purposeful walks, I have ski mittens which are great. But I also have thinner gloves as my hands warm up and become a sweaty mess (is that tmi?). So I switch gloves about a mile into.

Also wearing a scarf or neck warmer helps keeps everything else warm.

Surprised to find that I like the UGGS very warm, shearling lined, suede gloves. Too warm about 20 minutes into a 15 degree day walk. Spendy, but lucked out at half price before the holidays. Bloomingdales is advertising them currently at full price. Also check The Rack. The link is 10 lines long, so I omitted it.

As noted…the rest of her “winter walking clothes” need to be right too. Warm boots or shoes, socks, coat (maybe longer than a jacket length), scarf, hat, pants. Any weak link will make her cold.

I wear down mittens. Here: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_12?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=down+mittens+women&sprefix=down+mittens%2Caps%2C150&crid=OXRA3LGJ75T6

They really work.

When I am in CT during the winter, I use a synthetic lined mitten and an insulated glove underneath, something like these amazon.com/Terramar-S491-Thermasilk-Glove-Liner/dp/B002NPBTWS

or

Agree with going to a ski or sport shop, or order online from a place like rei or EMS. Exterior should be waterproof and breathable nylon type fabric (maybe wind proof or resistant too). Insulation should be thinsulate or a clone. Gloves can do the job, my whole family skis in gloves not mittens, and I wear ski gloves for general use when it’s bitter cold.

Although, yes, it’s true that it’s easier to keep fingers warm in mittens. Just might not be to everyone’s personal taste. I would probably switch to mittens at zero degrees or if I were going to be ouside at 14 for many hours. If a person is walking they will be warming up and it will help keep their hands warm.

Mittens! Who knew! Thank you everyone.

Agree with mittens, and handwarmers are great if it’s extra cold.

H got me battery powered gloves for Christmas a few years back…I love them!

I have these Gordini mittens and I think they are pretty cozy.

Maybe others have suggestions too.

L L bean has good affordable ones. Personally, I like ones I can put in the washing macHine because I use my hands outside and get them dirty. And yes, mittens are warmer (if you don’t need to use your hands outside.)

I just got back from Iceland. There is a brand there called north 66. They have some great gloves, hats, scarves and merino wool leggings that you can order online. These people know how to dress for the cold without looking like Ralphies brother on Christmas Story. I want to be buried in those leggings they’re so soft and cozy.

Hestra makes a variety of gloves and mittens that are great and rated for varying degrees of cold.

@eyemamom Yes, all the gear in Iceland is pretty awesome.
I think for most people any good quality ski gear brand will work. For cold weather and stylish boots, Canadian brands rule ( most are waterproof and higher quality), hiking boots can also work if your kid likes casual clothing. LL Bean is low on style and pretty high on staying in one piece. Some brands are expensive ( Bogner, Marmot, North Face). North face makes excellent gear so does Patagonia. Really her choice in terms of style, price and value. As with most things, the more you are willing to pay the larger the selection.

I love my Gordini gloves and mittens. Make sure they are long enough to cover the wrist too.

My hands get too hot in down mittens. I prefer wool. If it is below -20F I stay inside.

The Gordini gloves I linked have a wrist elastic but you can also tighten them about 3 inches above the wrist too…or not.
