Gluten free bread or rolls?

I’m looking for a gluten free, and dairy free recipe for some kind of bread or rolls for Christmas dinner. I’d prefer NOT to have to buy six different kinds of Bobs Redmill Gluten free products. Friend made a muffin for Thanksgiving that had a lot of vegetables shredded in it…to be honest, no one ate them…and they were fed to the birds.

I’d love something that is similar to regular bread or rolls…but gluten and dairy free.

Anyone?

Haven’t tried it and not a recipe but my local grocery carries the gluten free line of mixes from King Arthur. They also sell them online. Also, check their website for from scratch recipes. There recipes are pretty trustworthy and you can see ratings and comments to get some ideas on each recipe.

Rudi’s makes gluten free ciabatta rolls that I find in the frozen section of Fresh Market and they are really good. Unless you just want to make something from scratch. Wholes Foods own brand gluten free has great biscuits to reheat and any of the chebe breads or similar are good but not traditional roll taste (brazilian cheese bread) and so not as close to “real” bread as the Rudi’s.

Udi’s also makes baguettes and rolls. The rolls aren’t as good as Rudi’s IMO but the baguette might be okay is you baked, then turned into garlic bread.

Is cornbread an option? Southern style no-flour cornbread is so good. Favorite cornbread mix is Pamela’s because it doesn’t include the sugar. If you only use a Tbsp of sugar it is like traditional cornbread, if you add more (1/4 - 1/2 cup?) you get the taste of sweet corn muffins.

Edit: just noticed the dairy free part, you’d have to check on all these. Sorry

I live near a Fresh Market! Will check out the gluten free stuff there!

Whole Foods is a 45 minute trek.

Schar’s makes gf rolls that I think are also dairy free – vaccum sealed, and very good. Barring that, by far the best mix is King Arthur Flour. It says to make it as a loaf, but you can plop the batter into muffin cups for rolls. I do it all the time, and they are quite good if not funny shaped! You want to avoid mixes with lots of white rice flour (gritty) or bean flours like Bob’s Red Mill uses – we think it’s just too bean-y.

Canyon Bakers also makes frozen items that are good, and in many stores. The only one we really don’t like is Enjoy Life, tastes like styrofoam. Celiac household since the stone age, us.

@greenbutton would you mind sharing where this things can be purchased?

sorry, my bad…Canyon Bakers is Colorado based and sells in many grocery stores (Giant, Wegmans, Acme) but also online orders. Same with KIng Arthur (based in Vermont). – just about every store has at least some of the mixes but we have a standing order delivered. It can be easier to just ask what a store carries, since they can be kept in many different places in a store. Cooking for yourself, or for company?

@greenbutton I was thinking about baking these or buying to take to our Christmas dinner. The hosts are glutenand dairy free. The rest of us like bread!

Aussie Bites from Costco I believe are gluten free. They’re very tasty and filling little muffinettes.

Our easy & tastes great go-to for gluten free baked goods is Pamela’s.

We’ve used the Baking & Pancake Mix to modify some family recipes (cookies and muffins) to GF. We’ve also used the B & P mix to make some of recipes from the back of the bag or from the Pamela’s web site.

We’ve also used the Bread Mix, and everyone loved it. This is GF?! was the general response.

A number of these recommendations are great gluten free options but they’re not always dairy free. Finding good tasting breads that have neither can be a challenge. I don’t have any on hand but at one time the Pamela’s Baking mix included powdered milk. Companies change their formulations from time to time so it would be good to check. Udi’s bread originally contained dairy but I think I’ve seen some of their products advertised as dairy free.

Canyon makes great hamburger buns so their dinner rolls could be good too but I’ve never checked them for dairy.

@Midwest67 - I agree about the Pamela’s baking mix. Makes the best cookies and banana bread.

Based on the suggestion from this thread, I went to Fresh Market and bought the frozen Rudi’s dinner rolls. They are dairy free and gluten free, but DO have Egg Whites in them. My son is avoiding eggs right now (along with gluten and dairy and nuts and…etc.) but chose to give them a try anyway. He said he liked them.

this is a must watch video on gluten…you will laugh non stop.

The gluten free bread Costco sells is quite palatable. It’s much better than the bread at our local supermarket and has a very long shelf life.
