<p>The Volt will seat 4 people and go to speeds of 100 miles per hour. It has a 40 mile range on batteries which means most commuters won’t have to use the gasoline engine to refill the batteries.</p>

<p>Those specs are attainable right now for people converting gas cars to electric in their garages - although it take LiFepo4 batteries to get that range and speed, and the technology is still not mature. With conventional batteries you can get 100 MPH or 40 mile range, but not both. So the GM news is quite credible. But moving to a new technology is always risky, so I’m not surprised that the market date is 2 years off.</p>

<p>Cheverolet had the electric car done in the mid 90’s. They had prototypes that were driven by chosen people across the county, California wanted to lease these cars and then the Bush administration, oil industry, et al sued California and the car died. You should watch the documentary “Who killed The Electric Car?”</p>
