Gmail chat requests

I have two gmail addresses, one for personal correspondences and one for signing up for junk. On both I have been receiving notices that say “_____ would like to chat with you, accept or decline”. I’ve declinded, of course, but don’t understand why I’ve been getting those all of a sudden from total strangers. I don’t even use the gmail addresses on the same computer, so I don’t think it could be a virus.

Is anybody else getting this?

I haven’t gotten it on Gmail, but get it on Yahoo all the time…

Are you on Google+?

I don’t get chat requests but the people on my chat list generally come from my contacts list or I’ve sent/received email to them.

I stopped using Yahoo Messenger because I’d get 10 requests per day to chat to unknown people. Yahoo Messenger essentially became useless because of all of the spam.

Happens to me rarely on aol. I just decline.

No, this has never happened to me. However, I did have a complete stranger initiate a video chat with me on my iPad with FaceTime.

I am on google+. Does that have something to do with it? These are complete strangers though with very weird sounding email addresses. I’ve been on gmail for years and don’t ever recall getting this before so having it happen on both my email addresses all of a sudden seemed weird.

Google+ is social networking and maybe any network that you sign up for makes you visible to everyone on that network. I read how it works and decided not to join. There are networks that are interesting to me but I don’t want to open up my email address to large groups of people.
