It’s such a tough choice, Usps or finish my degree…
Are you my son? Seriously, my oldest son is with USPS as well and is thinking of going back because he wants to be a postal inspector. I have told him to take an online class to start with and NOT to give up his union job with benefits and retirement.
It took me 7 months of 6 day a week 10 hours a day to get to this point. It’s hard on the body but I’m scared of losing the pension because this means I can retire at 54 in 30 years. Should I sign up for 1 online class so I can have a placeholder so I can sign up for more classes next semester?
Yes, I think that you should consider it. I have told my son, who only has 4 months in but just got his own health insurance last month after aging out of mine, to sign up for an online class in an area that interests him. Do it at a community college to save money, just look at the equivalency charts with the 4 year schools you want to transfer to.
Are you a CCA? My son is and he may be getting a permanent route. He has been covering for someone out on disability who wants to retire out and my son is in line for the route. It is a tough job on the body but he enjoys it. He wasn’t ready for college when he got out of HS and he floundered before finding USPS.
Our local CC offers weekend and Sunday classes but he often works Saturdays and does the Amazon thing one Sunday a month so even those don’t work. That’s why I recommended an online class.
Good grief, you only have 7 months invested. And you’re counting on significant volumes of snail mail to continue to exist to sustain you in this job for 30 more years?
This sparked my train of thought and I just realized I have one night class this semester and I only work 40 hours a week, I can actually maintain my enrollment, this is actually exciting because I might be able to attend and work at the same time. Thanks guys!

I thought the same thing when my son took the job but then he reminded me that the delivery of mail is included in the Constitution and that there would probably have to be an amendment to get rid of it…In any event, it’s like the old Ann Landers story where someone wrote in and said I am 30, am I too old to go to medical school and graduate in 7 years. Ann responded - if you don’t go, you’ll still be 37 in 7 years AND you won’t be a doctor. There’s no point in discouraging someone from beginning a career that has good benefits at this particular time. Even if he doesn’t put in the 30 years, at this point, he’s accumulating towards a pension, is hopefully putting money towards a Roth and is gainfully employed. Plus, once you’ve been with USPS for 2 years, I believe that you can put in and transfer to almost any other place in the country where there’s an opening.

@techmom99 looks like I can take a few classes. I’m a regular employee now, I get off at 4 pm unless I volunteer for overtime so I can make it to 6 o clock classes
