Having lived in Cubs territory for most of my life…my blood still runs blue, and I’m going to go rummaging through the back of my closet for my old Wrigley Field Bleacher Bum t-shirt!! I’ve witnessed lots of prior meltdowns, but still hopeful that THIS is the “next year” they’ve always told me about…

Well, their magic number is 1. They still need to win one of the next two or have Milwaukee lose one of three games, including tonight’s, where San Diego is leading 4-3 going into the bottom of the 7th. If you’re a Cubs fan of any duration at all, you’re still not convinced.

It’s nice that the rotation is set up that they can lead with Zambrano next Tuesday. Who the wild card is going to be is very much up in the air. I see that Florida, one of the lousiest teams in the NL, after sweeping the Cubs this week to induce the usual paranoia, is up on the Mets 7-4 in the 9th…boy have the Mets fallen apart…it’s almost like the Cubs in 1969 except that nothing, except the '64 Phillies, were like the Cubs in 1969.

I’m thinking that even if (when? she says hopefully), the Cubs win the World Series, the 69 Cubs will still live painfully in everyone’s hearts.

Okay, Cubs & Red Sox both clinch. No idea whom the Cubs will play.

Here’s hoping for a Cubs v. Red Sox World series.

Cubs had their '69; Red Sox had '86 (and '78 and '75 and…)
