[Meet Dara Torres | Women’s Health Magazine](http://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/meet-dara-torres)

We were sitting in our den watching the footage of Dara training, and I was so awed, that I turned to H and said, “she’s downright scary!” And I didn’t mean that in a bad way! I’ve been really working hard on regaining my own fitness for about six months now, and though I’ve made drastic improvements, I’m not worthy to carry Dara’s swimcap.

If Dara “looks like a man”, then I want to be that beautiful!

Go Dara!

I met her at a swim meet a number of years ago. She’s gorgeous.

I wish more Americans were in decent shape even after having a baby so that it wouldn’t be soooooo incredible for a 41-year-old to look good. I hate to see people who think that just because they’ve turned 25 or 30 or 35 or 40 or whatever they’re supposed to be fat and out of shape.

Clearly, she’s a 41-year old babe. And I mean that as the highest compliment. Wife, working mother and tremendous athlete. The whole package!!!

VeryHappy–I’d agree. She looks great! But, that’s not impossible to achieve at 41 or so, even for the average person. Would be nice if someone fit & healthy at that age were not considered so unusual! :-)

Reality check here: Darra Torres spends about $100,000 a year to maintain her level of fitness. She has several coaches, trainers and stretchers. She has a nanny for her toddler. ( Her training takes up the entire day. It does not leave her time to take care of her child, maintain a household or work a job to pay the bills.) This is her life choice. She is very competitive and she has the financial resources to indulge her desire to be an Olympian. But it is not a choice that most of us could make, even assuming we had the ability to compete. Many of us in our forties have jobs and families(!!!) that we value and want to spend time with. When I was forty, I usually had about an hour to exercise and I did my best to stick with it. But most of time was spent taking care of my kids and my husband and I wouldn’t trade that time for all the Olympic medals in the world!!

I don’t think we should take away from her accomplishments just because she’s wealthy. There are many wealthy people who don’t have her ability and her drive.

Would be nice if someone fit & healthy at that age were not considered so unusual!

Dorothy lives across the street, she is unusual in that she is so active into her 90’s, but there are lots of athletic outdoor enthusiasts in our region. We don’t all look like Paul Allen. ;)

However to reach the level of Olympic athletics, is rare.

A HS classmate of my S2’s was on the last Olympic swim team (the Gold medal relay - no solo event). Her family lives around the block from us, in the same subdivision. Nice area, but not “rich”. She has at least one corporate sponsor, dropped out of college, and just bought her own house in a wealthier area of Atlanta. (Her family still lives here; her mother teaches at the local elementary.)

Given that, it’s possible that Dara’s income is a result of her Olympic history, and not the reverse. I have no idea what sacrifices her family made for her on the way up. It seems there are plenty of “fat and happy” folks around with money, so it doesn’t seem fair to diminish her accomplishments due to having money.
