ldmom: I agree about Roy Williams and his team. They’re very impressive (both on and off the court). I was so impressed with how humble and how gracious Roy was after the game, too, when they showed him on the news. And when asked how they all felt, he simply said “it’s a very happy locker room.” I bet it was!

You have to give credit to the Cameron Crazies and the Duke team too. The sports commentators even noted how the fans (and team) exhibited a tremendous amount of good sportsmanship last night. They were great hosts to their NC rivals. The Crazies cheered positively for their team, but did not shout any negative taunts toward their opponents, whether they were winning or losing. That was pretty impressive, in light of all the hype surrounding this intense rivalry. :)

1sokkermom/jack

I agree with both statements! I had heard about some of the more colorful Cameron Crazies cheers and was expecting the worst. But I thought everyone was extremely well-behaved. Even the one lone Tar Heel fan who found himself in the midst of the Cameron Crazies took his dose of Duke Blue very well…lol! ESPN showed that clip over and over! (We have a lot of fun with this rivalry since two of my d’s very close friends attend Duke. It’s a true rivalry too…ldgirl wouldn’t even entertain the idea of applying to Duke and visa versa for the friends.
)

And there was a wonderful ESPN piece on the Tar Heels after the Arizona game…very complimentary of their professionalism on and off the court. Comments made about their humble demeanor, conduct and even travel attire (suit and tie)…‘as if they had gotten the dress code memo from David Stern of the NBA’.

One thing that does kind of bug me…UNC Robertson Scholars who are in their Duke semester are still not permitted to sit in the Duke student section. I don’t know that UNC has this rule for the Duke Robertsons. Perhaps they do and I’m just not aware? I just think it’s kind of a step back from the true reciprocal spirit that is the intent of the Robertson program.

ldmom: I agree about how the Robertsons were treated. I think that the DSG has to come to grips with the fact that UNC Robertsons are also Duke students, with all the privileges; the same goes for Duke Robertsons at UNC. (And to my knowledge, Duke Robertsons are not treated that way at UNC.)

The DSG didn’t like what happened last year; of course, I suspect they wouldn’t have been so upset had that particular game turned out differently. Early on, when the DSG made their decision, I said that I thought that was an unwise (not to mention, immature) move, and I thought it would backfire-- in the form of bad karma for their team. I hate to say it, but . . .

I agree with you, though. It’s definitely “a step back from the true reciprocal spirit” of that program. I’m actually surprised the administration allowed it. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s reversed at some point as I really think it was a small minority of students at Duke (in DSG) that felt that way.

I think some were allowed to wait in line for tickets (just not tent) and did get to attend last night.

Oh . . . and I don’t think it’s very nice that the Cameron Crazies make fun of Tyler. That seems so mean, but he sure is focused.

Jack - What did the Cameron Crazies say about Tyler??!! He is adorable and seems to be such a good kid. In interviews his comments show maturity and sense of fair analysis. (I’m gonna get mad if someone is making fun of Tyler Hansbrough!)

ldmom:

Maybe they were reacting to the technical foul he got against him in the NC State game? The boy does seem to have a temper…:o

From one sports writer: “If you saw N.C. State’s upset of North Carolina Saturday, and you’re still trying to figure out why Tar Heels All-America center Tyler Hansbrough wasn’t ejected with 7:04 remaining when he appeared to throw a punch at N.C. State’s Brandon Costner, keep guessing…”

The Duke kids think he has the “deer in the headlights” look about him. Plus he does have a temper–I think the nickname he’s acquired is “psycho T”–not sure where I heard that.

Oh, and the ‘rat-face’ nickname for Coach K is sooooooo kind-hearted. :p

^well true point there banana…lol! I guess I’ll confine my issues with Coach K to the fact that, during the games, he spends more time chatting with refs and trying to get time on the clock than actually coaching the boys.

btw…I’ve watched every game (even the dang pay per views that we get stuck with here in Houston) except the State game (listened to that one). I’ve yet to see Tyler lose it. Maybe the ‘psycho T’ thing is something the Dukies got going in response to all the youtubes of JJ crying. hehehe ;)

btw…1sokkermom… I love Ivory! Nothing wrong with a little exuberance!

I think ‘the boys’ would disagree with you. I’ll trust them over someone who clearly has very heavy Carolina blinders on. :p

BTW, I think you’re a bit misinformed about how supposedly mean the Crazies can be. I really don’t see them as any more disrespectful to opposing teams than UNC fans. The ACC team with the most notoriously vicious fans is definitely Maryland. They’re just trying so hard to get people outside the state to believe they’re Duke’s rivals. Apparently throwing bottles at player’s relatives and thus putting them in the hospital is the way to do that.

oh come now banana! Of COURSE I favor Carolina!
But, I wonder do YOU have anything NICE to say about UNC? I wouldn’t think a Duke student would.

I don’t think I’m misinformed about the Crazies. Ya have to admit it’s a bit weird to see them in the stands of a game between Duke and Florida State wearing ‘Go to Hell Carolina’ T-shirts. And according MY Duke associates, the students are quite proud of their most profane cheers.

Btw…has the Cameron clock been fixed yet? (JK!)

That’s a rather silly thing to say, especially since I haven’t actually said anything negative about UNC in this thread. UNC produced my basketball idol (hint - Shelden Williams being my favorite player had a lot to do with sharing his number). I have always had tremendous respect for their basketball legacy, especially the Dean Smith era, and two years at Duke would not change that.

Besides, if I was going to take a swing at UNC, I’d be asking about how many of those Tar Heels hate Duke just that much more because they can still feel the sting of a thin envelope from the better school. ;)

See there…now we are being honest…lol!

I think I was answering your accusation of bias banana…and as one of those smart Dukies, you should know the old adage about the pot. :)

btw…‘the thin envelope’…comes more often to UNC oos candidates than Duke applicants. I can only speak about my d’s school; but the only National Merit Finalist attending school in NC from her high school is at UNC, the rest are at Duke :)

I do know the old saying about the pot, but in this case, the pot isn’t the same color as the kettle.
My fondness for UNC pre-enrollment at Duke prevented me from really buying into the rivalry. Maryland on the other hand…well, my thoughts are them aren’t exactly appropriate for this forum. ;)

Oh and you should probably stick to the admit rates, because you don’t want to duel OOS admissions anecdotes with me.
My middle-of-the-road stats for a Duke acceptee from my high school run circles around the kid UNC gave a scholarship.

PS: w00t, our girls pulled through! Just like last night, the better team won. ;)

I think I am beginning to understand why my son had absolutely no desire to apply to Duke. :)

Why not say what you really think instead of going the passive-aggressive route, complete with insincere smiley?
:)

“I think I am beginning to understand why my son had absolutely no desire to apply to Duke.”

Yep tyr - now you know why ldgirl refused to apply…lol!

banana - So what are we comparing? OOS acceptance rates to Duke acceptance rates? Sorry…ya won’t win that one. Or are you trying to compare a private school with no legally mandated in-state acceptance rate to a public school that is required by law to fill 82% of the student body with NC residents? Would it surprise you to know that though the acceptance rate at UNC is higher because of the law, the quality of the student body is not materially different? It is true. Do you wonder why? Hmmm… I do know that MANY in my d’s dorm and classes were accepted to both Duke and UNC-CH. She was AMAZED at the numbers. I think perhaps this is something that many Duke students don’t realize…there are a lot of outstanding in-state and oos students at UNC who had acceptances to Duke and other Ivies in their pockets (my d had the Ivy acceptance), but chose UNC-CH because the cost-benefit relationship of opting for Duke just wasn’t there. So try not to get caught up in all of the Duke propaganda about how special you all are. Duke is a good school, but so is UNC-CH. ;)

Also, the parent forums are full of parents. Also try to remember that.

OK, banana,

What I really think is that Duke is a great school, but that some of its students appear to have an unjustified sense of superiority that gets displayed (inappropriately) from time to time.

Lecture was uneccessary ldmom; I know the UNC OOS rate is lower than Duke’s overall, which is precisely why I told you to stick to that. :)

Sorry to see that you buy into the stereotype that Duke students are snobs though. Thought this was a fun thread, but I can tell when I’m not welcome. TTFN.

tyr - If ‘some students having an unjustified sense of superiority’ is a deal-breaker for you, then I hope you son didn’t apply to UNC either. You see that at any elite.

what does TTFN mean?

btw…I don’t think the ‘superior attitude’ thing is something that you’ll find at UNC. Or it hasn’t been our experience thusfar (except maybe when it comes to basketball
). The Carolina kids just seem really happy and well-adjusted…confident within themselves and with their own abilities.
