President Wallace Loh made some interesting comments during today’s inauguration.

Expansion of the university by 4,000 students

More of Maryland’s top students to attend UMCP.

[Loh: One-third of state’s best students should attend U-Md. - College, Inc. - The Washington Post](http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/college-inc/post/loh_one_third_of_states_best_students_should_attend_u_md/2011/04/28/AF7NLd6E_blog.html)

Thatis reassuring! Thanks for the article. It is great to know one’s child chose a school that is on the rise! Go Terps!

Maybe to meet this goal they can offer some monetary incentives to us incoming in-state students cough cough

The article fails to mention that UMCP defines “1/3 top students” as “1/3 of the highest SAT scores of students.” cough cough

As if the school of 25,000 isn’t big enough.

Yeah, well the legislature just cut off funding for the Maryland Distinguished Scholars scholarship. Good luck with that! Current seniors and students already in college will continue to have their four years funded. Current juniors who have already submitted grades, etc. are SOL.

I watched the video of the inauguration from today. (fast forward to the 1:02 hour mark to get to Loh’s speech)

He said that the 4,000 expansion is tied to the Shady Grove Campus. The state might be cutting off funding for students, but they are committing huge amounts of funds to construction projects at UMBC and UMCP. There is an advanced physical science complex being built at UMCP ($30 million + another $5 million in campus improvements) and a new performing arts and humanities building at UMBC ($31 million), among many other projects state-wide. Those projects are listed here:
