<p>My D went 3000 miles away as a freshman, yet seemed much more connected than my son who only went 400. </p>
<p>I moved 300 miles away at 17, 3000 miles from home at about 22, and never blinked an eye, until relatives started dying and my kids rarely saw their grandparents. </p>
<p>I could never understand why most of the people in my extended family stayed so close to home, but now I can see why some families/cultures work that way.</p>
