Hi, first sorry if this is not the right forum to ask this question.
I wanted to know if there’s a penalty for taking over more than the 60 units at a Community College. For example, if my major was a BS major and a high unit major and I am expected to go over 60 units, lets say I accumulated about 120 units total throughout my years attending a California Community College then I apply to UCs and CSUs.
My question is will they consider you as a high unit junior level or senior level standing? Is there any penalty through the application process where they will not consider you because you have completed over 90+ units at a community college and is already considered to obtain a Bachelor degree?
My question only applies to California Community Colleges Transferring to any UCs or CSUs just to narrow down the discussion. Thank You
While I don’t specifically know about California, I can’t imagine that there is any ‘penalty’ for accumulating more thatn 2 years worth of course credits. Certainly many students transferring into STEM majors need more than 60 semester credits in order to be fully ready to start out as a Junior at a 4-year college. I should think that even though you have extra units, you are still going to need approximately 2 years of work to get through the majors-level Junior and Senior courses that I presume you have not taken yet.
The more important issue is the minimum number of credits that your UC or CSU requires to issue a Bachelor’s degree. I’m pretty sure that UC-Berkeley requires 120 units to be taken from them. If that is the case where you are transferring to, then although there is no penalty, you will still have to go there full-time for 2 years.
