Would it be a good idea to turn down an amazing but expensive school and go to community college for a year, and then transfer to a school like yale or amherst with more generous aid?

Nothing wrong with saving $, but what are the chances of transferring into Yale or Amherst next year? Last year they were Yale (19/811) and Amherst (22/395). And how many of those transfers were from a CC? What other alternatives do you have besides CC and a very expensive school?

Nothing wrong with it, do you know if it’s possible to ask the college to defer admission for a year and in the meanwhile take community college classes?

Not sure if that would work.

It sounds as if you are an outstanding student and did well in admissions, but did not put enough effort and research into the financial aspect. If you are willing to take a year off and start over, I think that would be better than either a huge loan or a year at CC. Taking a course or so at CC would be fine, but when financial aid is a goal, it is better to apply as an incoming freshman than a transfer student. It would not be as good to have a full year of credits from a CC. It sounds as if you need to look at your best state school and at private schools known for giving good aid.

Yes, it is a good idea to turn down a school you and your family can’t afford. As for expecting to get into a top school when you want to transfer, wouldn’t count on that happening.

why don’t you find a school that is pretty good academically but will give you a full ride or excellent financial aid? A lot of mid-range schools or schools with great financial aid will do that for you.

When you defer admission for a year, you can’t attend another credit-granting institution.

An excellent point. Transferring from a CC is best for kids who didn’t do so hot in high school or who want to transfer to a state school. If you want to defer to figure out your financial situation (ie work), go for it, but I doubt a CC is the way to go if the school you got into is truly amazing.
