Going to a stellar college "just to be a teacher"

I do think, though, that the schedule is fair (personally, I think we should have longer school days, and longer school years) but Cobrat is more right than wrong. I get off 11 weeks of the year, plus random Monday holidays. Four of those weeks are paid vacation, and the rest is unpaid. Last year, I had mandatory workshops for three of those unpaid weeks (I got mileage and a $25 per diem) and I worked on prepping for the year for another several. I spent all of my paid vacation grading. I am not alone.

I believe this largely confirms what I kept hearing and noticing of friends who teach public school in NYC and other urban systems.
I doubt that has changed in the last twenty years due to the wide variation and needs of each school, neighborhood, and local community.

<p>All this means is that you and cobrat along with his long list of friends and relatives are not even remotely familiar with the workings of the NYC DOE system because he is wrong on so many levels (and yes, cobrat, I have worked at a wide range of schools from phaseouts, to Stuyvesant, screened programs, to ed opt programs to zoned high school-which there are none in manhattan and very few in the outer boroughs).</p>
