Ok, so first of all, sorry if this thread sounds stupid/trollish/selfish, but I have always wondered if girls were more inclined to date guys from top schools (i.e. HYPSM) than regular colleges/state schools (except top ones like Berkeley)? The reason I ask this is girls seem to like guys that are successful, (often times this seems to be the most important factor). Any comments on this? (if you can comment from experience i.e. my gf was really impressed when I told her I was studying at Yale), that would be great.

Again, sorry about the dumb nature of this thread.

It is the college life forum, I think it is a prerequisite that the topic is dumb, there is no need to apologize.

I don’t know I think it depends on the girl. If you are looking for the kind of girl that is on Jersey Shore (Guidette), I don’t think it matters since she probably would not be able to figure out what HYPSM stands for. But if you are looking for a preemptive gold digger who is trying to snag a man before he would make her sign a prenup, then yes I think the woman who views her marriage as an investment in a start-up would look for an elite education.

If the woman is somewhere in between these two extremes, which I hope is the case for you, then I really can’t help you.

Definitely having a successful career will help you get better quality tail. It also just so happens that going to a top college would help you have a successful career.

It isn’t like going to a top school is going to increase your chances at getting a girlfriend exponentially. All women are different, so it’s hard to say what each specific women wants in a man. Women are attractive to driven/motivated men, but some will assume you’re pretentious for going to a top school, while others will be completely unimpressed. It really depends on the woman.

Overall, I would say don’t count it. Instead of being a braggart about the school you go to win over women, charm them with your personality and wits. If that doesn’t work, there’s always chocolate to give them haha! Kidding ;)! But seriously, if you want a girl to be with you for the right reason, playing the “I go to Harvard” card will definitely not be your best bet. Not to mention, many girls might not even know the school you’re going to unless you go to Harvard. Personally, I know my parents have made a pretty good life for themselves, but they are completely unaware of the top schools. If it isn’t Harvard or Yale, they have no idea what I’m talking about…

I would be suspicious of any girl attracted to someone purely based on the school they went to… I think simply being a well-adjusted, smart guy should suffice.

I can only imagine someone really dumb and ditzy being like, “OMG YALE HOW COOOOOL!”

(And if she went to any other school besides an Ivy, she’d also have to have little respect for her own education to elevate yours above hers…unless you are looking to get girls who aren’t college educated…then…cough)

Gold diggers know: the majority of CEOs are from state schools, so there’s no use limiting yourself ;). It is highly likely that a state school boy is every bit as intelligent, passionate, ambitious; furthermore, it may be assumed that a Yale graduate is highly likely to be spoiled, arrogant, and/or socially awkward.

An elite education tag has both positive and negative connotations to outsiders. And educations at other places have good/bad connotations.

In the end, where you went to school doesn’t say anything about you as a person, and most girls know this. I’d imagine any girl would base her opinion of you on what you say and do, not on the name on your degree.

I want someone who can keep up with me to be honest.
So a more elite school would be more likely to draw my interest, but thats not the deciding factor for me, religious commitement is.
I’d pick a boy at a religious school over a top college.

NOTE: I am talking about having a girlfriend while at college, not later. Of course it would be stupid to brag that you went to HYPS when your 40 years old.

People are impressed by all sorts of things, but if you’re the type of person who solely relies on the name on his degree to get him through life, then that’s just sad. A girl might be impressed that you went to an ivy league college, and may even hold positive presuppositions about your intellect based off your education, but if you turn out to be a complete dud in actuality, then it’s obviously not going to work out.

“state school boys are just as intelligent and ambitious as yale undergraduates? that’s the biggest BS i’ve ever heard”

A lot of them are.

And since you don’t choose a boyfriend by saying, ok, I’m going to tour all of the top campuses, blindfold myself in their quad, flail wildly for exactly thirty seconds before freezing and then pick whoever I’m pointing at…

AND you don’t choose one by accepting a call for applications, and then sorting them based on their school/GPA/experience…

I’m pretty sure where a guy is studying has essentially zero impact on attracting the ladies…except that she might want to make sure he’s studying somewhere close to where she’s studying :P
